DISCUSSION
2.1.Exposition Text

Exposition text or exposition text is a type of writing that explains knowledge or

information based on facts to convince the audience or interlocutor. The information in
this text is generally conveyed briefly, clearly, concisely, but still accurately . Not only
that, if you create expository text, you also have to be sure that you can account for the
contents of the text.

"what does this exposition text usually discuss, anyway?"

Exposition text is usually created to express the author's opinion to discuss important
issues that are currently busy and hot to be discussed. Because it contains the author's
opinions and arguments, usually expository texts can give rise to pros and cons in society
which of course will have an impact on the author himself. This argument is also one of
the characteristics that differentiates expository text from other types of text, guys .

2.2.Analytical Exposition Text

The first type is analytical exposition . So, analytical exposition is an exposition text that
begins with a statement from the author to show their attitude and position in responding
to an issue or theme that will be discussed.

Analytical exposition is a type of text that presents arguments, opinions, or viewpoints

about a particular topic. It aims to persuade the audience by providing logical reasoning,
evidence, and examples to support the author’s stance. This form of discourse is
characterized by a systematic structure, including an introduction, body paragraphs
presenting arguments, and a conclusion summarizing the main points and reinforcing the
author’s position.

2.2.1. Social Function Of Analytical Exposition

As an open piece of writing, in expository text, the author will explain

something clearly and in detail. So , the purpose of this text is to explain information
or ideas regarding various aspects of life (economics, environment, health, etc. ) and
influence readers to agree with the opinions expressed by the author in responding
to an issue.
2
We can easily find exposition text in mass media, such as newspapers, scientific
articles, magazines, personal blogs , and many more.

Slightly different from exposition text in Indonesian which has several types, in
English, exposition text aka exposition text only has two types, guys . Anything,
anyway ? Come on, check it out! But,we only explain about analytical exposition and
other one is explained by another group.

2.2.2. General Structure

Reporting from the Ministry of Education and Culture's Learning Resources,

the general structure of analytical exposition is as follows:

The general structure of an analytical exposition typically consists of

Thesis,Arguments and Raiteration.

1. Thesis: This section introduces the topic or issue being discussed and presents the
author’s viewpoint or thesis statement.

2. Arguments: The body paragraphs present arguments, opinions, or viewpoints in

a logical and systematic manner. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of
the topic and provides evidence, examples, and logical reasoning to support the
author’s position.

3. Reiteration: The conclusion summarizes the main points discussed in the body
paragraphs and reinforces the author’s stance. It may also offer suggestions,
recommendations, or implications based on the arguments presented.

In summary, analytical exposition follows a structured format consisting of an

introduction, body paragraphs with arguments, and a conclusion, enabling the author
to effectively present their viewpoint and persuade the audience.

2.2.3. Language features of analytical exposition text

Language Features Analytical Exposition Text

To create analytical exposition text correctly, there are several linguistic rules that
you must fulfill.

3
➢ Using simple present tense .

In analytical exposition, the use of verb 1 (also known as the base form of the verb)
is common. Here are some guidelines on how to use verb 1 effectively in this type of
text:

1. Present general truths or facts: Use verb 1 to state general truths or facts about
the topic being discussed. For example, “Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.”

2. Express habitual actions: Use verb 1 to describe actions that are regularly or
habitually performed. For example, “People often exercise to maintain their
physical health.”

3. Support arguments or opinions: Use verb 1 to provide evidence or examples

that support your arguments or opinions. For example, “Studies show that regular
exercise improves cognitive function.”

4. Use in conjunction with modal verbs: Verb 1 is often used in conjunction with
modal verbs like “can,” “should,” “must,” etc., to express possibilities,
obligations, or recommendations. For example, “Students should study regularly
to achieve good academic results.”

Remember to use verb 1 appropriately based on the context and purpose of your
analytical exposition.

➢ Use connective words or linking words to connect ideas. Connective words can
be written in the form of phrases, clauses, sentences or paragraphs. To add ideas
or opinions , you can use: besides, furthermore, in addition to , etc. To compare
several ideas , you can use: while, vice versa, whereas, but, on the other hand,
henceforth, etc.

To show cause and effect , you can use: because, by, despite, as a result, etc.

➢ Using words that are opini(seem, feel, think, know, realize , etc.).

2.3.Text Example

The Transformative Power of Music

Thesis :

Music is not merely an art form but a transformative force that impacts individuals and
societies in profound ways.Music holds a unique position in human culture, transcending
boundaries of language and geography. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it possesses the power
to evoke emotions, shape identities, and even catalyze social change.

Argument 1 :

First, music has an amazing ability to influence and evoke a wide range of emotions in its
listeners for several reasons. Musical elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, and
lyrics can stimulate the parts of the brain associated with emotions. When we listen to
music we like, chemical reactions in the brain such as the release of dopamine and
serotonin can increase feelings of happiness, pleasure, or nostalgia. Dr. Daniel Levitin, a
neuroscientist, suggests that music stimulates various regions of the brain associated with
pleasure, emotion, and memory. Whether it's the uplifting melody of a symphony or the
melancholic notes of a ballad, music has the capacity to profoundly influence our mood
and emotional state.

Argument 2 :

Second, music also plays a role in shaping cultural identity. Each society has its own
traditional music that reflects their history, values, and beliefs. Music becomes an integral
part of a group's cultural identity, becoming a medium to tell their stories and pass on
cultural heritage to the next generation. For example, in certain indigenous peoples, music
and dance may be the primary way to celebrate religious rituals or other significant events,
and this helps preserve and revive their cultural heritage. Ethnomusicologist Dr. Patricia
Shehan Campbell argues that music serves as a repository of cultural heritage, transmitting
traditions, values, and narratives across generations. From indigenous folk songs to
national anthems, music reflects the diverse tapestry of human experiences and identities.

Argument 3 :

Lastly, music has the potential to influence social structures and societies. Music is often
used as a tool to convey social and political messages, be it in the form of protest songs,
national anthems, or musical movements fighting for change. Music can be a voice for
those who are not heard, awaken awareness of certain issues, or even unite people with a
5
common vision and purpose. Sociologist Dr. Tia DeNora contends that communal music-
making fosters social cohesion by promoting cooperation, empathy, and mutual
understanding. Whether through religious rituals, protest songs, or music festivals, shared
musical experiences have the potential to bridge divides and foster a sense of solidarity
among diverse groups.

Reiteration :

In this sense, music is not just entertainment or an art form, but also a force that can change
the way we see ourselves, our society, and the world around us. Its ability to trigger
emotions, shape cultural identities, and influence social structures makes music an
incredibly powerful tool for change and growth.

CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION
3.1.Conclusion

Analytical exposition is a form of discourse that aims to persuade and present a logical
argument. Its conclusion typically reinforces the main thesis or standpoint presented in
the text. The effectiveness of an analytical exposition lies in the strength of its evidence,
logical reasoning, and the ability to address potential counterarguments. In conclusion,
crafting a compelling analytical exposition requires a thorough understanding of the topic,
careful organization of ideas, and the use of persuasive language to leave a lasting impact
on the audience.
