WORKSHEET: MOLES AND MOLARITY

INSTRUCTION: Solve the following word problems. Write your answers on the space provided.

1. What is the molarity of KMnO4 in a solution of 0.0908 g of KMnO4 in 0.500 L of

solution?

M = 0.0908 Mol/ 0.500 L

M = 0.1816

The molarity of KMnO4 is 0.1816

2. What is the mass of the solute in 0.500 L of 0.30 M glucose, C6H12O6, used for intravenous
injection?
Calculate the mole
= 0.30 mol ×0.500 L
= 0.30mol ×0.500L
= 0.15 moles
= 0.15moles

Carbon = 6×12.01 mol

Hydrogen = 12×1.01 mol
Oxygen = 6×16.00 mo

= 72.06 mol+12.12 mol+96.00 mol

= 180.18 mol
Find the mass of the solute
= 0.15moles×180.18 mol
= 27.027grams
3. What volume of a 1.00-M Fe(NO3)3 solution can be diluted to prepare 1.00 L of a solution
with a concentration of 0.250 M?

= 0.250 M × 1.00 L / 1.00 M

= 0.250 L

4. If 4.12 L of a 0.850 M-H3PO4 solution is diluted to a volume of 10.00 L, what is the

concentration of the resulting solution?
= (0.850M)×(4.12L) / 10.00L
= 3.502 / 10.00

= 0.3502M
5. If 0.1718 L of a 0.3556-M C3H7OH solution is diluted to a concentration of 0.1222 M, what is
the volume of the resulting solution?
= (0.3556M)×(0.1718L) / 0.1222 M

= 0.06104 / 0.1222

= 0.5L

6. A cough syrup contains 5.0% ethyl alcohol, C2H5OH, by mass. If the density of the solution is
0.9928 g/mL, determine the molarity of the alcohol in the cough syrup.
Find the molar mass
= (2×12.01 mol)+(6×1.01 mol)+(1×16.00 mol)
= 24.02 mol+6.06 mol+16.00 mol
= 46.08 mol
moles
= 5.0g / 46.08 mol
= 0.1084mol
molarity
= 0.1084mol / 0.1L
= 1.084M

REFLECTION PAPER
INSTRUCTION: In not less than 5 sentences, answer the questions below.

1. Differentiate empirical formula and molecular formula.

The empirical formula may be similar to or lower from the molecular formula.
Empirical does sometimes represent the true amount of atoms in a molecule. While
Molecular formula represents the actual number of atoms in each element in the
compound's molecule. It gives more specific information on the composition of each
molecule than the empirical formula. If the molecular formula equals the empirical
formula, it means the compound's molecules have only one unit of each element.

2. Differentiate number of moles and molarity.

The number of moles tells you how many things you have. Molarity tells you how strong
that stuff is in a liquid, like how concentrated the juice is in a glass of water. So, moles
count the amount of substance, while molarity measures how much of that substance is
dissolved in a solution.

3. Differentiate molarity and concentration.

Molarity is like counting how many molecules there are in a liquid. It tells you how
concentrated a solution is by measuring the number of molecules in a certain amount of
liquid. Concentration, on the other hand, is just a way to describe how much of
something is in a mixture without specifying the exact amount per volume. So, molarity
is a specific way to measure concentration, like counting candies in a plastic, while
concentration is just a known term for how much things are in a mix. In summary,
molarity is a type of concentration measurement that provides the number of moles of
solute per liter of solution, while concentration is a more general term that can refer to
any measure of the amount of solute in a solution.
