Standard(s)/Guideline(s):
Domain: Language and Literacy
Strand: Language and Communication
Statement: 1.d. Participates in conversations with increasing application of turn-taking skills.
Pre-assessment of current knowledge: I chose to do this lesson plan because the children had already done building activities before in the block center at Bombeck so I knew
they would be fascinated.
blocks - But maybe if a student couldn't physically hold or stack buildings that we might find in our Dayton community.
- Have them walk to their objects to create their own building you could have them 4. Ask a friend to raise a quiet hand if they know what the
spots work with a partner, draw a building, or verbally describe picture you are showing is
one. 5. After the PowerPoint, call over a group of three at a time
to the hexagon table to start building whatever kind of
building they want
6. While the students are building ask questions such as
What buildings are you making or why did you choose
that material.

PowerPoint

Reflection: (What have you learned about your students? How will this inform future instruction?)
From doing this lesson plan I feel I have a better understanding of where students are at but I can also see so much creativity. I had
buildings as my part of the investigation. So, I wanted to talk to the Skyriders about what buildings might be in their Dayton community. I started with
a slide show of different buildings and asked if they knew what they were. Many of the students did know. I heard responses such as when Wyatt
said “Yes that is where people go to keep their money safe” referring to the bank photo or when Jack said “That is where we ship letters” referring to
the post office. Other responses include the name of the building or even when Eva said “book!” for the library. It was cool to see what they already
knew about the buildings in their area. They didn't only know the name but also their purpose.
As for the building portion, I think they enjoyed it. While they build I would ask “Why did you choose that material” or “What are you building”,
as well as “Are you building one of the photos from the PowerPoint slide”. Jack said “I made an ice cream shop”, Wyatt kept asking for more of the
pool noodles and I asked why and he said he was building a motorcycle. He would slide the pool noodles onto a popsicle stick, I thought this was

cool even though it was a building. Claire told me she was “building her house.” I asked what she was using the cardboard for and she said “for the
roof” When that didn't work I asked if there was a different material you could use. She then tried paper which worked. She would also explain parts
of the house like “the cups are my kitchen”. She knew all the areas. I also found it interesting that after building she began to draw a house. But for
example, Elliot did not seem very engaged. She put the pool noodles into the cups and then walked away.
Overall, I think the students really enjoyed this and I feel like it went pretty well! I now know maybe for future instruction how to group kids
and which kids might be interested in doing an activity like this again.
