What’s In Activity 1 p. 274

Directions. Supply the blank boxes with the causes and effects from the given geologic
hazards.

life, infrastructure ruin, land
degradation, and natural
resource depletion.
Earthquakes A sudden slip on a fault Ground shaking, ground
causes an earthquake. rupture, landslides, tsunamis,
and liquefaction are all
repercussions of earthquakes.

What is it: Activity 2 p. 289

Directions. On the box provided below, list down the human activities that
cause landslides. Describe each one how they contribute to the cause of such
hazardous event.

>Mining - Because of its various operations that produce a large

number of vibrations, particularly blasting techniques and their
vibrations that can reach hundreds of meters beneath the soil
surface, it is a cause of landslides and poses a threat to surrounding
places that are at risk of sliding

> construction activities - Construction of roads and railways, for

instance, it may obstruct or alter natural water drainage. Water may
travel to a different course when there is severe rainfall or flooding,
saturating slopes and causing landslides.
> kaingin - The kaingin farming system, which involves cutting and
burning trees to prepare for plantations, has a number of negative
consequences. Landslides are the most well-known impacts.

Directions. Using the hazard map found on your module, answer the
following questions.
1. Identify the top 3 places in the Philippines that are hazard-prone to
volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides. Justify your answers
why they are most prone.
> in the volcanic eruption the 3 most prone are camiguin, sulu,
biliran. First on the rank with the highest risk is Camiguin
because the land area was so small. If volcanic eruption may
occur, the whole province can be affected. Sulu ranks second
because it has the greatest number of active and dangerous
volcanoes. The 3 most prone in earthquakes are surigao del
sur, benguet, la union. Surigao del sur are risk to hazard due
to Philippine trencg and nearby active faults while la union are
due to manila trench, benguet is due to its location in
philippine fault zone and the 3 most prone in landslide are
marinduque, rizal, cebu. It's because they are located in
mountainous area after massive and continuous rain or
earthquakes, certain areas on the hills and mountains become
delicate and weak which makes the region exposed to
landslides as well as to other provinces that is why their area
is classified as rugged and mountainous with prominent flat-
lands.
2. What is the importance of using a hazard map?
It shows the locations that are vulnerable to a specific hazard. Landslides,
flooding, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis are all examples of natural
dangers. It's also utilized to counteract the harmful consequences of these
risks.

What’s More: Activity 3 p. 289

Directions. Have you experienced landslide in your community? What are the
causes of such event? Share your experience. If not, kindly interview a person
who has a first-hand experience to landslides and ask his feelings, thoughts and
actions toward the event.

My father experienced landslide so i interview him, he said that the cause of its sudden landslide is because of
falling of trees, the people there are cutting trees that cause of falling trees and it became landslide. He thought that
it can cause accidents and it will cause traffic or car accident.

WRITTEN TASK
Abstraction:
What I can do p. 278

Directions. Identify hazardous places during or after earthquakes on the

following locations.
1. Home
It can be windows and other glass items, unanchored bookcases, furniture
that can topple, items on shelves, and areas that could be blocked by falling
debris.
2. Classroom and school building
It can be Worn or torn surfaces such as carpets. Assisting an unsteady
resident. Changes in floor heights, unidentified steps. Obstructions such as
items stored in the corridors.
3. Community (e.g. barangay, municipality or provinces)
it can be damaged buildings, damaged power lines, and leaking gas and
water lines are just a few of the hazards you might face after an earthquake.

The answer must be something similar to this: In the community: Damaged roads and bridges

What I have learned p. 289-290

Directions. In a short bond paper, prepare a poster showing human actions to

be conducted to mitigate the hazards posed by landslides.
The following criteria will be used to evaluate the output:

● Connection to the topic 5 points

● Layout and design 5 points

PERFORMANCE TASK
Application:
Additional Activity p. 280

Directions. Interview a family member, a relative, neighbor or

anyone who experienced geologic hazards and answer the following
questions below.
1. Have you ever experienced any form of geologic hazards such as
volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides? How did you feel?
What did you do during and after the situation?

2. If you have never experienced any form of hazards, look for someone who
was able to witness and experience it first-hand. Ask them their feelings
and thoughts during and after the hazard event. Also, ask them the things
they did during and after the scenario.
> I have experience an earthquake, it makes me scared that top
of our house might fall down because it’s weak during the
earthquake. After the earthquake I felt relived because it cools
down and no more shaking. I did during the earthquake is
cover, and hold under our table. After the earthquake I make
sure that it’s safe and I leave the house to make sure that I’m
safe and my family.

What I can do p. 290

People must be mindful and careful enough doing activities that may lead
to occurrence of landslides. As a student, how will you do your part in preventing
landslides as to information dissemination, awareness and mitigation planning?

As an SHS student, I will spread my knowledge in order to broaden their

understanding of landslides, their causes, and their consequences for society. I will
encourage youths to participate in awareness initiatives on natural geologic risks
such as landslides. A campaign to plant trees, Maintain as much vegetation as
possible on the slope to help retain the soil. to prevent landslides is an example.
