Making the World a Better Place for All: Political Society and the Principle of SUBSIDIARITY
Helping others is not only good for them and a good thing to do, it is also makes us happier and healthier too. Giving
also, connects us to others, creating stronger communities and helping to build a happier society for everyone. And it’s
not all about money- we can also give our time, ideas and energy.
Empowerment means to increase the degree of autonomy and self-determination in people and in communities in order
to enable them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority.
POLITICAL SOCIETY
POLITICAL SOCIETY- refers to an organized community under one government. The government refers to the political
administration of a state or nation. The citizens elect leaders into office thereby authorizing the government to
implement laws for the people and for the good of society.
A political organization is any organization that involves itself in the political process. Including political properties, non-
governmental organizations, advocacy groups and special interest groups, Political organizations are those engage in
political activities ( e.g., lobbying, community organizing, campaign advertising, etc.,) aimed at achieving clearly- defined
political goals, which typically benefit the interests of their members.
The Philippines follows a presidential form of government. The power is equally divided among the three branches:
executive, legislative, and judicial.
The Philippine Constitution states the government’s duties and responsibilities to be able to provide for its citizens. Here
are two specific sections:
1. Article II, Section 5. “The maintenance of peace and order; the protection of life, liberty, and property; and the
promotion of the general welfare are essential for the enjoyment by all the people of the blessings of
democracy.”
2. Article II, Section 9. “ The state shall promote a just and dynamic social order that will ensure the prosperity and
independence of the nation and free the people from poverty through policies that provide adequate social
services, promote full employment, a rising standard of living, and an improved quality of life for all.”
What is the most important purpose of government?
The government balances the goals and decides the mixture of policies for society. The government seeks to
balance the interests of the individual with the interests of the community. The government is rooted in the power of
the people. The government’s most important purpose is protection.
THE PRINCIPLE OF SUBSIDIARITY
The principle of subsidiarity is often considered a result or consequence of common good. The root word of
“subsidiarity” is “subsidiary” which is derived from the Latin verb subsidio which means “to aid or to help,” This gives us
an idea on the principle of subsidiarity. As a people, we are part of one body. Each part of the body has its particular
function in keeping the person alive and healthy. Subsidiarity is about how people in a society appropriately balance the
duties and responsibilities among the different members.
This principle goes hand-in-hand with Participation, the principle that all peoples have a right to participate in the
economic, political and cultural life of society, and in the decisions that affect their community.
This implies that each member of the society has a role to play for the betterment of the community:
Barangay Officials, Church Organizations, Commercial Establishments, Private School Students, and Nongovernment
Organizations.
