History of Barangay Candelaria

In the beginning, there was no barrio known as Candelaria but a sitio called Meligos,
a part of Barrio Rizal of Sierra Bullones. The vast agricultural land was then scarcely
populated. The pioneering families came from Argao, Cebu and some from the neighboring
towns. While farming was the main source of living, the biggest portion of the
meadow was turned into a cattle ranches by well-off families in the neighboring
towns.
Before the outbreak of the Second World War, a couple from Rizal moved to
this SitioMeligos, taking along with them their Altar Devotion, BIRHEN sa
CANDELARIA, the most treasured image which was housed in a temporary chapel at
the middle of the cleared field. Every year, migrating families from Cebu and other
places of Bohol started to settle in the place until such time the cattle ranches were
phased out.
In 1946 after the Second World War , several families evacuated to Meligos
remained and believing that Rizal is quite far from their place, a group of concerned
elders converged to discuss the plan to elevate the sitio into a barrio. Without losing
time, the municipal council of Sierra Bullones confirmed the petitions thus giving the
name Candelaria in honor of the patron saint of the couple. In the year 1947
Segundo Maluenda was appointed as the first Teniente del Barrio. His term lasted for
four years until 1950.
On May 7, 1951, PanfiloComaling was the next appointed as Teniente del
Barrio. Probably, he could not adjust himself with the position, he resigned.
Immediately election conducted to fill-up the vacant post, FlorentinoDalay was elected
the next Teniente del Barrio who served from 1951 to 1953. In the years that
followed, DorotinoMantica became the next Teniente del Barrio. He served from
1953 to 1956. With this span of time, improvements of the barrio appeared at a time,
public primary school was built on a donated area and the chapel was finally moved
to the new site at a donated area by civic spirited residents.
In 1956-1971, MelchorOripaypay was elected next Teniente del Barrio. This
was the time when Barrio Colonia of Carmen, Bohol was granted township by virtue
of Executive Orders 184 on June 21, 1956 signed by the President Magsaysay. The
municipal council of Sierra Bullones cede Candelaria as a barrio of Dagohoy, the
name of the new town. In effect on May 7, 1957 after the lapse of several months
and years varied.
So, under the Martial Law Government of President Marcos,
TranquilinoComaling was then elected Teniente del Barrio . He served from 1971-
1975. Without seeking for re-election, EmilianoOripaypay became the next Teniente
del Barrio from 1975-1978. From 1978 to 1982 MarcialBelano was elected Teniente
del Barrio. He wassucceeded by Liborio Lomod who served from 1982-1989. In a
twist of events , the terminology of Teniente del Barrio was changed to Barangay
Captain whom RupertoGoco Jr. was elected as the first Barangay Captain with
honorarium under the Aquino administration. His term started from 1989 to 1994.
In 1994 election, Teodoro Oripaypay was elected barangay captain and became
the Barangay Captain of Candelaria . The incumbent Barangay Captain is Cresteto
Orepaypay. He lead the celebration of the barangay foundation day which serves as
one of the significant events of the place, commemorated annually by the populace. It
is a hope that this event will be continued by the generations to come to give
respect and honors to the people who exerted efforts of raising the status of barangay
Candelaria up to the present.
B.1 Socio-Cultural
. According to come retired barangay officials and old folks, Candelaria was only a
sitio “Meligos” before part of Barangay Rizal, Sierra Bullones, Bohol. This sitio was
once abundant on its fertile soil, with fowls and with few houses stand at far
distance from each other , now-there’s a big difference, it turns as disco-like arena
were there are roaring farm machines, vehicles sounds and rice mills that will waken-
up the populace early in the morning.
Most people in the community depends their livelihood on farming. Aside from grains
and root crops, they have also vegetables and animal raising. The farmers of the
barangay are united and they form an association/cooperative called Candelaria Multi-
Purpose Cooperative (CMPC).

The barangay has seven existing licensed sari-sari store to meet daily
needs of the people. Rice mills are also available in the community.
Presently, the barangay is very solid in their religious and spiritual
aspects as a Roman Catholic in faith because out of 285 household only three
household belonged to other religion (Iglesia ni Kristo and Protestant). Not only
Candelaria celebrated the annual fiesta but the whole world celebrated every 2 nd day
of February in honor of “Birhen sa Candelaria” in which blessing of candles ceremony
was done first before the mass started. A novenario is held for nine consecutive
nights, through the energetic and active barangay chapel officials, cluster leaders and
barangay LGU officials , who joined their effort to organize different activities, and
with the help and full support of the DepEd family, thus making the fiesta
celebration more momentous and enjoyable. Basketball tournament, volleyball, singing
contest, disco and coronation rites are always held every year. Nightly activities are
practiced every after novena which are sponsored by the different puroks and different
agencies in the barangay.
