BARANGAY PROFILE

Barangay Sto. Nino is located at the middle part of different barangays: San
Vicente, Ilaya, Bulusan, Kulo-Kulo and Lumangbayan. It is one of the nearest barangay
in town proper.

It was a Sitio/part of Barangay Ilaya before and was called Nacoco for the reason
of putting the National Coconut Corporation on the vicinity of it. When Republic Act
4390 was passed, Nacoco became an independent barangay and separated from afirst
barrio lieutenant. During that time, there were few houses which had far distances. The
Breeding Station of the Bureau of Animal Industry was built on the barangay and later
on, the Sto. Nino Hospital, owned by former Governor Francisco Infantado was
established. The next barrio lieutenant was Mr. Damasco Mandigma (1963-1967) then
followed by Mr. Abel Martinez (1968-1971). During the term of Mr. Martinez, the name
Nacoco was changed to Sto. Nino, taken from the name of hospital in this place. Barrio
Lieutenant was also changed to Barangay Captain and Mr. Pedro Lomio (1972-1976)
was the first.

Different offices such as DBP, BIR, NFA, and Foster Parents Plan, Inc., were put
on the place. Because of it, Barangay Sto. Nino was receiving the highest share, given
by the National Office, taken from the income of the barangay. As years went on,
people from different places migrated on this place. Houses were built especially when
Lopez and Samaco Subdivision were opened.

Later on, the hospital was renovated and was turned into Flamingo Hotel with a
little disco pub at the back of it. And now, it became the office of Department of Agrarian
Reform. Sto. Nino Primary School became an elementary school because of the
increase of enrollment. Four building were added and a multi-purpose building was also
constructed inside the school compound.

ITS CONDITION

 Climate of Sto. Nino

The climate condition of this barangay is the same as the climate conditions in
Northern Oriental Mindoro. Being directly exposed, as all the rest of the municipality of
Calapan area, to the nearest monsoon, the rain period comes from June to December.
The winds of the northeast bring rains to this place during the said period of the year
and there is a pronounced dry season on the month of January to May. However the
rain varies from the minimum during June – July gradually increases from August to
September. The heaviest rainfall occurs during August to November, in which time the
rainy season is at its height. It is also called the typhoon season. The coldest part of the
year is from December to January while March and April the weather is warm.

 Products

The place which is not covered by sub-division mainly agricultural. Coconut is


grown in the place mostly in high coastal areas nucabering around hundred thousand
trees in the area which is approximately forty hectares.

Banana, camote, and cassava are also grown in large quantity Nipa is still found
in the riverbank. Selling charcoals, vegetables and fruits remain as the main source of
food and livelihood of the populace.

 Economic Life

In general the economic life of the people in this place is even. Most of the
people are independent workers and this gives them incentive to work harder in order to
produce more. Almost all people kept busy with varied occupations. Breadwinners of
the Family with other members go to work as laborers in the rice mills, drive tricycles or
jeepneys, sell in the market, wash clothes for other families and have their own mini
sari-sari store at home. Charcoal peedlers sometimes come from this place. Therefore,

to help also plant vegetables in their backyard for home consumptions and for sale. In
this way, majority of them are able to provide the daily needs of the family.

Although the income of the family is generally low, as is usually the case in this
place, the people are contented and happy. Majority of the people in this kind of income,
can still manage to make both ends meet. This is made possible because they live a
very simple life. Their wants are limited to extreme necessities. Luxury is seldom, if ever
luxurious living. They remain as simple as their poor neighbors. Thrift economy in
everything is the byword of everyone.

As in overall pictures of the life of the people, it could be said that it is dependent
upon the condition of their income. As poor income means a loan year for the people
and a good income promises abundance.

 Social Life

The people, here spend also their leisure activities especially during Sundays
and holidays, they indulge in some kind of pastime. Going to the cockpit is the popular
pastime of the men. For the women, the elder ones they recontented to attend parties
such baptismal, birthday, and wedding parties. The younger set aside from attending
parties, have another social activities or their own. They organize clubs. They have
dances. Sometimes club programs are held. They have here the “ANAK BUKID CLUB”
which Mrs. Fe Garcia Lopez as the adviser. During the month of May, the people both
young and old used to celebrate flores de mayo as it is a barangay fiesta celebration.
They celebrates also its own fiesta. A barangay fiesta is always a big social occassion.
Friends and relatives who are living far from other always find them to see and enjoy the
company of each partake or the best food during fiesta. During this occasions, there are
always dances programs and games. As a form of recreation the boys played
basketball. They also form a league for the purpose of having basketball tournament
which are being participated by different barangays. The officers of the said league asks
for the trophies to be given to the winners.

The people are business minded,. After a period of work, some used to play
mahjong as a sort of relaxation. Others just prefer to stay at home and beautifies their
homes and surroundings. People of Sto. Nino are also religious. They can be seen
joining religious activities like the Block rosary, Cursillo Movement and many others.

Aside from joining to such activities, people showed their kindness when
someone died. During the period of mourning they used to visit the dead and join the
relatives and family in their hour of bereavement. They extend their helps by giving
donations, offering prayers, flowers and even assist the bereaved family in entertaining
the visitors.

 Religious Life

The people thought not so pious as they maybe, profess a religious of their own
choices. There are several sets found in this barangay but the dominant one is the
Catholic religion.

4% - Iglesia ni Criisto

3% - Jehovah Witnesses

2% - Protestant

1% - Mormons

Some of the people believe that God exist everywhere, so some old people are
not going to church anymore. They say they just pray at home. But some of them are
also religious. They accept the images of the Blessed Virgin Mother to say the rosary at
their homes as well as the Stations of the cross.

It is very interesting to note that seem to be deeply religious during the month of
May. In this month, the “tuklong” is being beatified in preparation for the Santacruzan.
Novenas and procession are held daily in every evening. This religious practice last for

almost whole month of May. At the last day they have a mass for thanksgiving in the
morning and at night they have “sagalas”. Young and old are joining in this occasion. All
of these are purely religious in nature.
