✓ All questions carry equal marks
✓ Attempt ALL questions full marks
✓ Graphs on pages 4 & 5 are part of the answersheets

Question 1 (20Marks)
a) Why is water supply important in both domestic and industrial establishments (3marks)
b) Differentiate between Constant and intermittent water supplies (2marks)
c) Briefly describe the occurrence of hardness of water and how it can be overcome (5marks)
d) Illustrate, with the aid of a sketch a suitable water supply connection from the street main
to the consumer’s internal stopcock. (5marks)
e) From the DATA given in the diagram below, calculate the pipe size required for the
distribution pipe supplying from a reservoir in the indirect system of cold water. Estimate
your answer to the nearest available commercial size of both steel and copper pipes.

Question 2 (20Marks)
a) You are the consultant for the client on a typical construction site, tasked to carryout
inspection and testing of the newly laid drains. Mention any 2 tests you would carry out
before commissioning of the building. (2marks)
b) Calculate the fall in a 50 metre section of foul water pipework if the suitable gradient is to
be 1 in 80. (2marks)
c) For each of the 12 houses, the following appliances(see table below) are installed. Size the
foul water pipework for the 12 houses from the data below in the table. (Use a minimum
gradient of 1:80 for all pipes) Give reason for your estimation. (5marks)

No Appliance No. of Discharge Units

2 WC 14
2 basin 3
1 bath 7
1 shower 4
1 sink 6
0 washing machine 4
0 dish washer 4

d) Size the surface water pipework for 12 houses using the DATA given in the table below.
(Use a minimum gradient of 1:80 for all pipes and rainfall intensity of 50mm/hr) Give a
reason for your answer. (6marks)
SURFACE TYPE AREA(A) m2 IMPERMEABILITY
FACTOR (f)
Road or pavement 20 0.90
Roof 40 0.95
Path 15 0.75
Garden 68 0.25
Access road, parking 25 0.90

e) From BS 6297, the size of the septic tank depends on the quantity of liquid being
discharged into it which is dependent on the number of people in the dwelling. Calculate
the capacity (in m3) of a septic tank required for a house with seven occupants. (5marks)
