Nothing Artificial Beats the Original

By Katrina Oxales

With the gradual progression in the field of technology, the fear of being displaced by
artificial intelligence escalates within the public. The unfavorable effects of artificial intelligence
outweigh its advantages for the reason that it poses a potential threat towards the educational
system and the skill set of learners. It is disheartening to witness the terror it would transmit to
the public once the world turns completely dependent on artificial intelligence.

Nowadays, education sectors have been plagued by the existence of artificial intelligence
within their institution. The use of AI platforms—like ChatGPT, for instance—hinder critical
thinking and problem solving skills for students. With accordance to some reports, students
would present AI-generated contents as their own which illustrates their reliance on technology.
As a result, these students would lack the skills needed in order to perform sufficiently in their
environment.

Moreover, one of the major concerns of the public with regard to artificial intelligence is job
displacement—the education sector is not an exception for this. As technological institutes act in
furtherance of artificial technology, the demand for human educators would decline. In this
case, the global unemployment rate would make a huge leap. With the rise in the unemployment
rate, there would also be an upsurge in the poverty rate as a result of workers being unable to
provide for their families.

Nonetheless, many students already utilize artificial intelligence to accomplish tasks without
putting in much effort. Unbeknownst to these students, their complacency in the present would
cause adverse effects on their efficiency to do their job in the future. In that case, they would lack
creativity—one of the most important aspects a person should have to be an effective worker.

As shown in a study, the decrease in human interactions would result in emotional

intelligence deficit. Due to social media algorithms which display only what aligns with the
interests and opinions of the user, it would be challenging for them to be exposed to diverse
perspectives which deteriorates their empathy towards others. That being said, adapting to
change and developing skills would be difficult for those who are dependent on technology.

All things considered, nothing can be done to cease the development of technology; however,
we can mitigate its drawbacks by refraining from the excessive usage of artificial intelligence.
The quality of the education system can be ameliorated by providing a sufficient budget to
produce efficient learning materials so that it would reduce the complacency among students
along with the fact that their skills would be honed to avert them from relying exceedingly on
artificial intelligence. Education sectors should invest in human resources development to
promote competent educators. At the end of the day, people have one thing that no amount of
technological innovation could ever imitate—empathy.
