CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

As our world has advanced when it comes to technology, it has

paved the way for the invention of modern-day technologies. The
advancements in these tools brought a new and improved life to everyone
in our society.

The help these advancements provide in our daily tasks is evident,

especially in lots of fields, including education. These technologies have
reshaped the way we communicate, work, study, and access information.
Together with the evolution of modern technology, the emergence of
artificial intelligence (AI) has awakened us to the things that robots and
machines can do that we thought only humans could. Because of the
benefits we can gain from such tools, we sometimes rely on these
technologies without letting our minds work and let these machines do
the job for us.

Senior high school students belong to Generation Z, which is why

it is no question that they grew up under the influence of the internet
and other information technologies. However, despite being familiar with
these digital tools, they may face difficulties in effectively utilizing these
technologies if they do not have the proper knowledge that they must
acquire to use them. It can range from a lack of understanding and
understanding about AI, having limited access to AI resources, to the
need for guidance in the ethical and responsible use of AI technology. As
PANGASINAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

observed by the researchers of Pangasinan National High School most

students may rely on AI, it is taken as an opportunity to make it easier to
accomplish tasks.

Therefore, our study aims to identify these challenges and provide

insights into how they can be addressed. By doing so, we hope to
promote a smoother integration of AI technology into the education of
Senior High School students and prepare them better for the future
digital world.

According to Seo, K., Tang, J., Roll, I., Fels, S., & Yoon, D. (2021).
The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in online learning
has the potential to enhance learner-instructor interaction. AI systems
can personalize the learning experience, automate routine tasks for
instructors, and provide adaptive assessments. However, the impact of AI
systems on the culture, norms, and expectations of learner-instructor
interaction is still not well understood.

Also stated by Akgun and Greenhow (2022). The integration of

artificial intelligence in K-12 education brings numerous benefits but
also raises ethical concerns. AI has various applications in education,
such as personalized learning platforms, automated assessment
systems, and facial recognition systems, which can enhance students'
learning experiences and support teachers' practices. However, ethical
challenges including privacy concerns, surveillance, autonomy, bias, and
discrimination need to be addressed. Privacy issues arise from the
collection and use of personal data by AI systems, while surveillance
systems raise concerns about privacy and autonomy. Predictive analytics
algorithms can affect students' autonomy, and biases and discrimination
can be embedded in AI algorithms, perpetuating existing systemic biases
and inequalities.

Slavov, et al. also cited (2023). The technologies that rely on

artificial intelligence (AI) already present a threat to multiple sectors of
society, including in the field of education. It shaped education to be
more data-driven. AI-enhanced technologies will have a major impact on
students on how students learn and as well as how the educational
system will function and be structured in the future given the
advancements these technologies have, as well as the technological,
legal, and ethical aspects of AI-enhanced technologies in education, must
be taken consideration. However, this phenomenon does not only happen
in Pangasinan National High School but in other schools as well.

Open AI education, the responsible and ethical use of ChatGPT

towards lifelong learning, Mhlaga David (2023). Significant changes in
society, the economy, and the environment because of the quick
development of the world. Artificial intelligence has advanced
significantly in recent years, which has sparked the creation of
groundbreaking technologies like Open AI’s ChatGPT. Modern technology
like the ChatGPT language model has the potential to revolutionize the
educational landscape.

AI and education: A guidance for policymakers, Miao et al. (2021).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to address some of the biggest
challenges in education today, innovate teaching and learning practices,
and ultimately accelerate the progress towards SDG 4. However, these
rapid technological developments inevitably bring multiple risks and
challenges, which have so far outpaced policy debates and regulatory
frameworks.

The idea map of this framework provides the most important

insights into the challenges that students go through using technologies
in education.

This is related to our study as it pertains to the challenges and

issues that students have been through while using technology for
education. Students have been struggling for the new environment that
they have been through.

Conceptual Framework

This study is also anchored on Digital Citizenship Education Act

which recognizes that media and technology, where students must learn
how to safely, ethically, responsibly, and effectively use media and
technology resources.
PANGASINAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

In addition, the Student Data Privacy Act protects students'

privacy in digital learning. Considering the bigger picture, laws and
regulations about technology have a significant impact on education.
These laws, along with others, shape how technology is used in schools
and influence decisions about teaching.

Understanding these connections helps us come up with ways to

improve. This might mean finding a balance between technology and
offline activities or supporting teachers in using technology effectively. By
recognizing how everything is connected, we can find solutions that work
for everyone involved.

Challenges Faced by Senior High School Students

According to Moshinski, et al. (2021). Modern technologies are creating

new worldwide trends in education, necessitating a redesign of
educational possibilities as well as assessments of new opportunities and
risks. Research was conducted on the new educational technology
development phase as a response to contemporary global issues.
Analysis is done on the strategic priorities of education in the EU.

New technologies, practices, and related needs: financing, digital

integration, accessibility, informational security were studied and
generalized. The analysis of the seven years of NMC Horizon and other
research emerging educational technologies adoption forecasts provided
in the research shows significant discrepancies related to extreme
uncertainty.

Study and generalization were done on new technologies, behaviors, and

associated needs, such as funding, digital integration, accessibility, and
information security. Significant differences linked to high uncertainty
are revealed by analyzing the seven years of NMC Horizon and other
research emerging educational technology adoption estimates offered in
PANGASINAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

the study. From the NMC Horizon report 2020, five trend groups related
to education were examined. Using the university's online/mixed
learning program as an example, the author explained the significance of
remote education tools. The most in-demand tools are Google Meet,
email, and specialized learning platforms like Moodle, according to
anonymous surveys conducted among instructors and students in the
spring of 2020—shortly after the COVID-19 quarantine was declared.
Technical issues and occasionally bad Internet access are obstacles to
fully fledged remote schooling. The participants are more than prepared
to use digital resources for education and to learn. But in online
learning, the lack of real-time communication adds to the effort, and
additional issues surface that decrease student engagement. The primary
goals of education in times of extreme change are diversity and
accessibility.
