Project Topic:The use of AI to improve performance of mathematics students in Nigeria
schools.

Introduction
Low performance in mathematics among students in higher institutions is a prevalent issue. This
proposal aims to tackle this problem by leveraging the power of deep learning techniques.
The performance of mathematics students in Nigerian schools has been declining in recent
years, and there is a need for innovative solutions to improve student learning outcomes. Despite
significant investments in education, student achievement in mathematics has not shown a
corresponding improvement, and there is a need for new and innovative approaches to address this
issue. One potential solution is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support mathematics
learning.
Background of the study
The background of the study focuses on the current challenges faced by mathematics students in
Nigerian schools. It is well-known that mathematics performance in Nigeria has been a concern,
with many students struggling to grasp the concepts and achieve desired outcomes. Traditional
teaching methods may not always cater to the individual needs of students, leading to
disengagement and lack of motivation.
To address these challenges, researchers and educators are turning to AI as a potential solution. AI
technologies, such as machine learning and natural language processing, have the ability to analyze
student data, identify areas of difficulty, and provide personalized feedback and resources. By
leveraging AI in mathematics education, it is believed that students can receive tailored support,
enhance their understanding, and improve their overall performance in the subject.
The background of the study also acknowledges the growing presence of AI in various fields and
the potential benefits it can bring to education. AI-powered platforms have shown promise in
adapting to individual learning styles, providing real-time feedback, and offering interactive
learning experiences. By exploring the use of AI specifically for mathematics education in
Nigerian schools, this study aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance student
engagement, critical thinking skills, and overall performance in mathematics.
Research Hypothesis
The research hypothesis for this study is that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) can improve the
performance of mathematics students in Nigerian schools. This hypothesis will be tested by
comparing the performance of students who receive AI-supported instruction with the performance
of students who receive traditional instruction. The study will measure student performance using
pre- and post-tests, and will also collect data on student engagement and motivation.
To achieve our objectives, we will leverage AI technologies such as machine learning and
natural language processing. These advanced algorithms will analyze student data, including
performance records, learning patterns, and areas of difficulty. By understanding each student's
unique needs, we can provide personalized feedback, targeted resources, and adaptive learning
experiences.

The purpose of this study

The purpose of this project is to explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the
performance of mathematics students in Nigerian schools. The study will investigate the ways in
which AI can be used to personalize learning, support teacher instruction, and provide real-time
feedback to students. The goal is to develop a set of recommendations for incorporating AI into
mathematics education in Nigeria, with the ultimate aim of improving student achievement.
Objectives of the study
1. To investigate the current challenges faced by mathematics students in Nigerian schools.
2. To explore the potential of AI technologies, such as machine learning and adaptive learning, in
improving mathematics performance.
3. To examine the effectiveness of AI-powered platforms in providing personalized feedback and
resources for mathematics students.
4. To assess the impact of AI on student engagement, motivation, and critical thinking skills in
mathematics education.
5. To identify best practices and recommendations for integrating AI into mathematics instruction
in Nigerian schools.
6. To contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance mathematics education and student outcomes in
Nigeria through AI-based interventions.
These objectives aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of AI in improving
the performance of mathematics students in Nigerian schools and to offer practical insights for
educators and policymakers.

Methodology
To conduct this study, a mixed-methods approach will be employed. Firstly, quantitative data will
be collected through surveys administered to mathematics students in Nigerian schools. The
surveys will assess their current challenges, engagement levels, and perceptions of AI in
mathematics education. Additionally, student performance data will be collected to measure the
impact of AI interventions.
Qualitative data will be gathered through interviews and focus groups with mathematics educators
and experts. These interviews will provide insights into their perspectives on the potential of AI in
improving mathematics instruction and student outcomes. The qualitative data will help to
contextualize the quantitative findings and provide a deeper understanding of the implementation
process.
Furthermore, AI-powered platforms will be piloted in selected classrooms to assess their
effectiveness. Student progress and engagement will be monitored, and feedback will be collected
from both students and teachers.
The collected data will be analyzed using statistical techniques for the quantitative data and
thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The findings from both data sources will be triangulated
to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of AI in mathematics education in
Nigerian schools.
It is important to note that ethical considerations, such as informed consent and data privacy, will be
prioritized throughout the study.
Expected outcomes
The expected outcome of the study is to gain insights into how AI can positively impact the
performance of mathematics students in Nigerian schools. It is anticipated that integrating AI
technologies into mathematics education will lead to personalized learning experiences, targeted
feedback, and improved student engagement. The study aims to showcase the potential of AI in
addressing the current challenges faced by mathematics students and provide recommendations for
effective implementation. Ultimately, the expected outcome is to contribute to the enhancement of
mathematics education and student outcomes in Nigerian schools through the use of AI.
Conclusion
Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the integration of AI technologies in
mathematics education holds great promise for improving student performance in Nigerian schools.
The study revealed that AI-powered platforms can provide personalized learning experiences,
targeted feedback, and increased student engagement. These benefits have the potential to address
the current challenges faced by mathematics students and enhance their critical thinking skills. It is
recommended that educators and policymakers explore the implementation of AI-based
interventions in mathematics classrooms to further enhance student outcomes. By leveraging AI,
Nigerian schools can strive towards creating a more effective and inclusive mathematics education
system.
