INTRODUCING ONESELF
❖ Introducing yourself to someone does not mean that you are just telling your
name.
❖ The introduction can include other details such as: where you are from, where
you work, the job you have, your hobbies, and much more.
How to Greet Someone
▪ Miss: use it with a complete name when you address a card, letter, etc. to a young girl/ young unmarried
woman. It is sometimes also used without a name.
▪ Ms.: use it for both unmarried and married women. Use it when marital status isn’t important.
▪ Mrs.: it is used for married women.
▪ Ma’am: use without a name, use it when speaking to a woman who is older than you or to a woman who has a
position of authority.
▪ Sir: it is used for adult males of any age
▪ Mr.: use it for both unmarried and married men. Use it when marital status isn’t important. Followed by name.
Do not use it for young boys.

Introducing Oneself (job interview, scholarship, etc.)
Talk about your:
 Experiences, professional work story, passion, Interest
 Start by greeting your audience when you are introducing
yourself to someone you’ve just met, you can say ‘Hi’, ‘Hello’, or
‘Hey’.
 YOU MUST GRAB the attention and HOLD the eyeball of your
audience. If you start your introduction with the words “I am…”,
you will see your audience yawning or perhaps falling on the
shoulders of each other.
2-5 MINUTE SELF INTRODUCTION
Points that can help you create an effective introduction:
❖Your passion for life. Mention where you are trying to hit in
life.
❖Your interests and hobbies. BE CALM AND
❖Your experiences CONFIDENT
EXAMPLE
o Hi! Good morning beautiful girls and handsome boys, here. Let me
introduce myself, for you will regret if you don’t know about me.
o I am a graduate of Universitas Gadjah Mada, where I earned a
bachelor’s degree in nutrition and health. Also, I got my master’s
degree in nutrition at that university.
o Following graduation, I worked as a research assistant at
Universitas Gadjah Mada, in which I became interested in education
and research.
o After a year I became a research assistant, and I tried a new job.
Yap, I tried to be a lecturer.
EXAMPLE
oWhy did I choose this profession? You must know, that by being a
lecturer I can share my knowledge with my students, and I can do
much research, especially about health that can help my
government to solve many health problems in Indonesia.
oAs a lecturer I teach a lesson on nutritional assessment, nutrition life
cycle, nutrition and dietetics, anatomy and physiology, sport
nutrition, and English.
oI have a plan to continue my doctoral program, and I will take my
doctoral program in Australia. Someday, I hope I can reach my
dream. Thank you for your attention.

PARTS OF SPEECH
English has several kinds of words, which are called the “parts
of speech”.
Individual words can become different parts of speech
depending on their function in a sentence.
Example:
These new methods reduce the need to use harmful chemicals
on crops.

ARTICLES
➢ An article: is a special kind of adjective.
➢ Indefinite articles: a and an
➢ Definite article: the
➢ Examples:
 I look at a pen, and the pen has a unique shape.
 I received a check in the mail yesterday, but I don’t know
what the check is for.
ARTICLES: "A” AND “AN”
➢ “A” or “an” can precede only singular count nouns.
➢ The mean of “a” and “an” is one.
➢ They can be used in a general statement or to introduce a subject
that has not been previously mentioned.
➢ “A” is used before words that begin with a consonant sound. Ex: a
book, a house, a university
➢ “An” is used before words that begin with a vowel sound. Ex: an
apple, an umbrella, an hour
➢ They cannot be used for plural count nouns and non-count nouns.
ARTICLES: “THE”
➢ “The” is used to indicate something that we already know
about or something that is common knowledge. Ex: The boy in
the corner is my friend. The earth is round.
➢ With non-count nouns, use the article “the” in specific terms,
but no article if speaking in general. Ex: The sugar on the
table is from Yogyakarta. Sugar is sweet.
