Introduction

Self-esteem as an essential psychological concept that has been identified as

one of the central factors determining an individual’s emotional and psychological

state. The concept of self-esteem is critical especially during adolescence, and

Grade 10 is the age of formulating self-concept and identity, which is defined by

(M. Bagum 2023) as the development of self-esteem. Therefore, it can have a

considerable impact on student's academical performance and well-being.

One of the major factors that had been overlooked during the investigation of

the academical performance of G10 students in GBLMIS is the effects of low-

self-esteem in the academical performance of students in GBLMIS. There is a

gap between the academical performance of Grade 10 students with low self-

esteem as compared to students with a high self-esteem. Grade 10 students with

low self-esteem tends to score lower or perform less competitive compared to

students with high self-esteem.

There is a large body of scientific data and observations on the topic that

inspired the researchers to study and have a clear understanding about the of

the impact of low self-esteem in Grade 10 students at the Gaudencio B. Lontok

Memorial Integrated School. The socio-cultural environment of the students’

education is unique, which can mean that there are some special factors

affecting the deteriorating self-esteem and performance of the students.

According to (Rosenberg 1965) as cited by (Omedeu Doris 2021) believed

that low self-esteem reduced a person's level of confidence, motivation, and grit,

which affected academic performance in a negative way. A number of studies

have since confirmed Rosenberg’s research results, proving a close relationship

between self-esteem and adolescents’ academic results. Nevertheless, the exact

reasons and ways of how low self-esteem leads to a bad academic performance

continued to be a matter to research and investigate.

This research was conducted in order to know and understand the deeper

correlation between low self-esteem and the overall academical performance of

G10 students in GBLMIS. Furthermore, this research aims to bridge this extant

research gap by investigating the causes and results of low self-esteem among

grade 10 students of Gaudencio B. Lontok Memorial Integrated School. In

addition, it aims to help in identifying factors that play a part in boosting the self-

esteem of the students resulting in the promotion of such factors. This research

will consider not only to have contributed uniquely to the body of knowledge but

also provide realistic recommendations and insights for the stakeholders.
