ACTIVITY SHEET #3: Making Judgements

GEAR UP
MELC: Judge the relevance and worth of ideas, soundness of author’s reasoning and the effectiveness
of the presentation

At the end of this worksheet, the learners will be able to:

1. define relevance, worth of ideas, soundness of author’s reasoning, and effective presentation; and
2. determine the relevance and worth of ideas, soundness of author’s reasoning and the effectiveness of
the presentation

ENGAGE
MAKING JUDGEMENTS
Every day, we read, watch, and listen to different ideas from various sources such as radio, television,
newspapers, print ads, online sources and many more. These media offer a lot of information. Sometimes, the
information they offer are the same, other times they are different. Therefore, we need to be careful in choosing
whether to believe everything that we read, watch, or listen to.
As a student, it is very important that you know how to judge the relevance and worth of ideas, soundness of
author’s reasoning and the effectiveness of the presentation to be able to determine if the information provided
is true, credible, and believable. When you make judgements, you make a decision, or form an opinion
objectively and wisely after thinking carefully about the following:

RELEVANCE
Relevance typically refers to learning experiences that are either directly applicable to the personal aspirations,
interests, or cultural experiences of students (personal relevance) or that are connected in some way to real-
world issues, problems, and contexts (life relevance). It is also the perception that something is interesting and
worth knowing. Notice that it has two parts: (1) interest and (2) worth knowing. The two ways to establish
relevance is to see the information’s utility value and relatedness. Utility value answers the question “Yeah, but
what am I going to use this for?” Relatedness on the other hand, answers the question “What’s this have to do
with me?”

WORTH OF IDEAS
Worth of Ideas refers to the value of the information or ideas presented; something that is important for us to
know or understand. These are truthful information that are verifiable and can be determined based on the
credibility of the sources and its relevance.

SOUNDNESS OF AUTHOR’S REASONING

Sound Reasoning is simply reasoning that makes sense and follows some sort of logic. This can also be seen
as reasoning that is free from any form of bias or prejudice. Prejudice is judging someone without knowing
them, based on what they look like or what group they belong to. Sometimes, these prejudices are expressed
or communicated in the information shared through different media. Bias, on the other hand, happens when
key information is either measured, collected, or interpreted inaccurately. This is common when only one side
of the issue is presented.

EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION
The main purpose of presentation is to give information, to persuade the audience to act and/or to create
goodwill. A good presentation should have a good subject matter, should match with the objective, should best
fit the audience, and should be well organized. To communicate the desired information, effective presentations
should use more of visual aids such as transparencies, diagrams, pictures, charts, and the like. If the
presentation is written, the ideas must be logically organized using appropriate transition words and divided into
inter-connected paragraphs to effectively convey ideas. Meanwhile, if the presentation is oral (watched or
heard), delivery should be clear with varying tone, rate, and volume of voice to aid the meaning, complexity,
and importance of what is being said.

Duterte: Retaking West Philippine Sea was Never a Campaign Promise
by David Tristan Yumol
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 4) - President Rodrigo Duterte emphasized on Monday he never promised
to retake the West Philippine Sea from China when he sought the country’s top post in 2016.
“I, never in my campaign as president, promised the people that I would retake the West Philippine Sea. I did
not promise that I would pressure China,” Duterte said during his weekly national address. “I never mentioned about
China and the Philippines in my campaign because that was a very serious matter.”
The President’s statement was contrary to his controversial remark during the 2016 elections, where he said he
would ride a jet ski to plant a Philippine flag on man-made islands occupied by China.

During the CNN Philippines Town Hall meeting in February 2016, Duterte mentioned he would stop the
expansion of China in the West Philippine Sea.
“If I will be in the presidency for two years, walang nangyayari (and if there’s nothing happening), China keeps
on expanding, I will tell them you better stop them because that is ours,” he said.
Days before he assumed the presidency in June 2016, Duterte stated he would not surrender the country's
rights over the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
In his latest national address on Monday, Duterte stressed that Beijing remains the country’s benefactor.
“Just because we have a conflict with China doesn't mean we have to be rude and disrespectful. As a matter of
fact, we have many things to thank China for— the help in the past and itong mga tulong nila ngayon (their help
now),” the President said.
Duterte was referring to Beijing’s involvement in some of the administration’s “Build, Build, Build” infrastructure
projects and Manila’s COVID-19 pandemic response, such as the provision of test kits and Chinese-made COVID-
19 vaccines, which comprise the largest bulk of the country’s present vaccine supply.
In his speech, Duterte appealed to China to let Filipino fishermen fish “in peace” in the disputed waters.
“Kindly let our fishermen to fish in peace. There is no reason for trouble. If there is one brewing, we can talk
immediately to solve the problem,” he said.
