What is a Literary
Analysis?
LITERARY CRITICISM/ANALYSIS

•A literary analysis is not merely

a summary of a literary work. Instead,
it is an argument about the work that
expresses a writer's personal
perspective, interpretation, judgment, or
critical evaluation of the work.
Formalist Criticism
•It highlights the “form of a literary work to
identify its meaning.” What makes a work of art
depends highly on how “all of its elements (style,
structure, imagery, tone, genre) work together
to offer to the reader’s experience (thought,
feeling, reactions, etc), not by any context such
as the era, social setting, and author’s
background.

APPROACH
READER-RESPONSE APPROACH

• Reader-response approach/criticism describes the “internal

workings of the reader’s mental processes, affirming that
reading is indeed a creative act and process. The meaning of
a text highly depends on how the reader responds to it. The
interpretation is likely influenced by one’s experiences,
culture, and period of time.

Excerpt “The Other Mother” of the novel Coraline

Background: Coraline is a children’s novel that deals

with the macabre, as reflected in the mirror, images
of reality. These images are reflections of the
protagonist’s own desires. It seems to be filled with
fantasy, but it is also a psychological journey inside
the main character’s heart and mind.

trapped in a place of loneliness and she
perceives herself that way. Due to lack
of love, support, and attention from her
parents, she feels like her life is a

put colors on it.
GUIDE
QUESTION:
ANSWERS:
When Coraline met the ghosts of the children the
beldam has trapped, she was curious of what and
who they were. When she found out who they were,
she felt sympathy while talking to the ghosts about
the things they had lost and what she might lost too
if she decided to stay in the other world for a long
period of time.
GUIDE
QUESTION:
Answers:
The ghosts suggested her to flee from the beldam but Coraline, with
much courage, is determined to save her parents and the other
children too. She replied, “I don’t think so,” said Coraline. “I tried
running away, and it didn’t work. She just took my parents. Can you
tell me how to get out of this room?” This suggests that Coraline has a
strong and brave character with determination. She still chooses the
world with her real parents showing how much she loves them. The
protagonist had been an image of hope in the end for the other
children.
