2x + 3y = 310 ……….. समीकरण (i)
3x + 5y = 500 ……….
6x + 9y = 930
- - -
y = 70

SUBSTITUTION METHOD
Substitution method & Elimination method are the Algebraic methods to find
solution of a pair of Linear Equations. Here we will discuss about Substitution
Method.
STEP I: We will express any variable (x or y) from any equation in terms of other variable.
Here we have expressed x from equation (i) in terms of y. Mark it as equation (iii).
STEP II: Substitute the value of variable obtained in equation (iii) in the equation other than from
which its value was obtained.
12 + 9𝑦 = 30
9𝑦 = 30 − 12
9𝑦 = 18 ⇒ 𝑦 = =2
STEP III: Substitute the value of variable obtained in equation (iii) and solve it to get the value of
the other variable.
variable
Put this value of y, in equation (iii)
( )
𝑥= Q. For the given equation:
4x + 5y = 8
⇒ 𝑥= (i) Express x in terms of y
(ii) Express y in terms of x
⇒ 𝑥= ⇒ 𝑥 = 12
Notes x y 25 x + y=25
STEP 1: Take the L.C.M of the coefficients of any one variable say x or y in the two given
equations (Here we take x)
For the given equations we take L.C.M of 2 and 4 (coefficients of x in two equations) which is
equals to 4.
STEP 2: Make the coefficients of x in two equations same (as L.C.M of the coefficient) by
multiplying with a constant.
We multiply equation (1) by 2 and get 2(2x + 3y = 8) = 4x + 6y = 16 so the two equations now
have same coefficient of 'x' i.e. 4.
STEP 3: Now by adding or subtracting the two equations (which have equal coefficient of x)
depending upon if the coefficients have opposite signs or same respectively, we eliminate the
variable x and solving the equations in one variable to get its value.
Here we have same sign coefficients of x in the equations so we subtract the equations:
4𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 16 1. If already equal coefficients of same variable, no need to multiply.
4𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 8 2. Free to eliminate any one variable of the equation.
- - - 3. When the coefficient of one variable is multiple of the other for
𝑦 = 8 same variable, only one equation need to be multiplied.
STEP 4: Substitute this value of one variable in one of the original equation to get the value of
other variable
