SECTION A: COMPREHENSION
QUESTION 1: READING FOR MEANING AND UNDERSTANDING
Read TEXTS A and Text B below and answer the set questions.
TEXT: A
2 Cara Delevingne has made a name for herself in the modelling and acting world
(and on social media for her wacky sense of humour). Although the success she
worked for eventually materialised, it didn't automatically translate into self-
acceptance. In an essay for TIME magazine's Motto, Delevingne revealed her 5
struggle for validation in the industry and how she later realised that gaining outside
approval isn't really that important after all.
3 The supermodel recalled the beginning of her modelling career at age 16 and how it
took a while to establish her career.
5 Despite her best efforts at pleasing everybody, Delevingne noted that there were
still people who were unhappy with her work. And that made her think about what
she was trying to do and for whom she was working so hard.
6 "Over time, I came to realise that work and getting others' approval isn't the most
important thing. Yes, your career is very important — but it's not the most important. 20
Of course I was proud of my accomplishments, but I wasn't genuinely happy," she
wrote, emphasising the importance of having a life outside of work.
7 "It's taken time, but now I realise that work isn't everything and success comes in
many forms," Delevingne wrote. "I've opened my mind, and now I embrace new
things with a childlike curiosity. I'm spending more time doing the stuff I love and I’ve 25
been able to do better work because of it."
8 "When you're coming from a place of living just to work, it's never as good as you
want it to be. It's never as authentic. When you have balance in your life, work
becomes an entirely different experience. There is a passion that moves you to a
whole new level of fulfilment and gratitude and that's when you can do your best… 30

TEXT C
Develop a thick skin. A lot more work goes into re-touching images than most people realise.
Some models can be completely altered in pictures from the way they normally look. There are
many tricks used to create that perfect image - I even once had my ears superglued back
because a photographer thought they stuck out too much.
Believe it or not, not all models live on sticks of celery and two grapes a day, the majority of
models actually eat a normal healthy diet, and can even enjoy the odd burger and milkshake.
But don't tell anyone...
There is often a lot more going on behind a photo shoot than the finished picture presents. The
model may have to work on a really cold or hot day wearing completely the wrong type of
clothes for the season, have had 100 outfit changes or had to pose in uncomfortable positions
to get the shots.
With so many camera phones backstage at shoots and runway shows sometimes someone
will try and capture models at times when they may not want to be photographed.
Despite getting to wear the most beautiful, expensive, glamorous outfits, models unfortunately
don’t actually get to keep the clothes. Sometimes you may get lucky and get to keep
something, but this rarely happens.
Most people believe models just have photo-shoots every day, whereas in reality many models
(apart from supermodels) find it tricky getting regular bookings. There can often be periods of
time with nothing but castings before work starts coming in.
There’s also all that waiting: to get your hair or makeup done, waiting for the photographer to
set up, waiting to get your photos back, waiting for runway shows to start or waiting to be seen

at castings. That’s why you often see models with a book or iphone in hand as there is so
much free time.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE IS TIRED OF BODY- SHAMING
1 The Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Lawrence said she believes "it should be illegal to
call somebody fat on TV".
3 "But I think when it comes to the media, the media needs to take responsibility for
the effect it has on our younger generation, on the girls who are watching these
television shows, and picking up how to talk and how to be cool.
4 "So then all of a sudden being funny is making fun of the girl that's wearing an ugly 10
dress and calling her fat. I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV.
5 "If we're regulating cigarettes and cuss words because of the effect they have on our
younger generation, why aren't we regulating things like calling people fat?"
6 Lawrence's comments came after she was questioned about shows, such as E!
Fashion Police, presented by Joan Rivers, which criticize the way women look and 15
has attacked Lawrence for her view. The actress, who won an Oscar for “Silver
Linings Playbook”, has often been outspoken on the subject of body image.
