Taekwondo After School

Students from Cahuenga Elementary School during their weekly Taekwondo class. Along with the free lessons, over 300 participating students received free uniforms.

Due to the popularity of a Taekwondo program Beyond the Bell ini7ated at Burroughs MS in 2010, nine addi7onal LAUSD schools are beneciaries of the program this year. Once he observed how successful the Burroughs MS program was, Beyond the Bell Field Coordinator John Han worked with the Los Angeles Korean Cultural Center to expand the program to include more schools for the 2011 - 2012 school year. Along with Burroughs, the schools that now have Taekwondo aOer school programs are 3rd Street ES, Wilton Place ES, Cahuenga ES, Denker ES, Topeka ES, Berendo MS, Young Oak MS, Fairfax HS and Los Angeles HS. Taekwondo is a mar7al arts program and the na7onal sport of South Korea. During the 10-week aOer school course, instructors (Masters) from the Korean Cultural Center teach students the basic moves of Taekwondo. Par7cipa7ng students not only exercise, but also learn self-defense techniques and self-discipline through this non-contact sport. Beyond the Bell is always looking for innova7ve ways to engage students during aOer school hours. The crea7on and implementa7on of the Taekwondo program looks like another successful approach!
