Exercise 1. Read the passage and answer the following questions.

Octopus

An octopus lives in the ocean. It has eight

arms. That is where the name "octopus" comes
from. In Latin, the word "octa" means eight. So
the word octopus comes from that. Its arms are
very strong. An octopus uses its arms to move in
the ocean. It can move very fast. The arms of an
octopus have sticky suckers on them. This allows it to grab things
for food. An octopus has a kind of beak for a mouth. Its body shapes
like a pouch. It can change colors too. Most of the time, it is pink.
An octopus can turn brown to look like the rocks around it. Turning
brown allows the octopus to hide. An octopus has perfect eyes. It
seeks out food and grabs it with its tentacles. The most common
octopus in the Atlantic Ocean is ten feet long. Some can be as small
as two inches. In the Pacific Ocean, some get as big as thirty feet.

Dishonesty
Katie's mom could always tell when Katie wasn't telling the
truth. Of course, she didn't have to use that talent often. Katie was
rarely untruthful. One morning after breakfast, Katie told her mom
that she wasn't feeling well. Katie said that maybe she should stay
home from school. Her mom looked at her without saying anything.
Katie grew nervous as her mom stared into her eyes. Then Katie's mom
put her hand on Katie's forehead. She said she didn't think Katie had
a fever. Katie shook her head. No, she didn't have a fever. Her mom
asked her if her stomach hurt. Katie shook her head again.
No, she didn't have a stomachache either. Then Katie's
mom asked her if she had finished her homework before
going to bed. Katie admitted that she hadn't. Katie's mom
knew why she didn't want to go to school.

Breakfast

What did you have for breakfast today?

Many people eat cereal. It is an easy meal to
make. You pour it into a bowl and add milk.
Some people slice a banana on top. Cereal is
also fun. Sometimes toys come in the boxes. Or
it has colorful sugary pieces in funny shapes. Kids even play with
cereal. They listen to it snap, crackle, and pop. If children have
more time in the morning, they might eat toast. They spread jelly
and butter on top. Some kids may cook eggs and bacon. This is a
more filling meal. Waffles are another favorite. Kids like to put one
drop of syrup in each waffle hole. You can make fresh waffles or
buy frozen ones. The frozen ones cook in a toaster. Breakfast helps
you start the day off with energy and a full stomach.

Snow

Snow can be fun to play in. When it

snows, you can go sledding. You can also
make snowballs. Even though the snow is
cold, it can be a lot of fun. Have you ever
wondered how snow is made? Clouds have
water vapor in them. Water vapor is water
that is not a liquid. It is a gas. Have you ever seen a pot of water
boil, and then steam rises from it? That steam is water vapor. So,
how is snow made from that? Well, when the temperature is cold
enough, the water vapor freezes into a crystal form. That crystal
form becomes a snowflake. Snowflakes have six sides. No two
snowflakes are alike. They are different sizes and have different
patterns on them. Snow can also be dangerous, especially when
driving. People have to be very careful when driving in the snow
because it makes the roads slippery. Warmer places, like in the
southern United States, do not get much snow. It doesn't get cold
enough there for snow.

Art Class
Nicki loved the art class. She looked forward

She couldn't understand why some of her friends complained
about it. To her, it was the only time she felt she could be herself.
In art class, there was no wrong answer. There were no timed
tests. She liked drawing best. Sometimes she spent hours at home
drawing objects in her house. She would sketch flowers, tables, her
parents, and their cat. Today she could tell something exciting was
planned. Her art teacher, Mr. Martin, was smiling in the doorway.
He explained to the class that they were going to have an art show.
He had picked several drawings that they had been working on and
hung them around the room. He was going to invite their family
and friends to come and buy the drawings. The money that the
class made would help pay for more art supplies. Nicki was thrilled
to see that not one but two of her drawings were hanging on the

Jack-o'-Lanterns

On Halloween, it is a tradition to carve

a pumpkin. These carved pumpkins are lit
with a candle. They are called jack-o'-
lanterns. The tradition began in Europe.
Europeans carved scary faces into gourds and turnips. They were
lit and used to keep evil spirits away on Halloween. With the help
of an adult, you can make your jack-o'-lantern. The first step is
to cut an opening in the top of the pumpkin. You should save the
piece to use as a lid. Next, clean out the inside of the pumpkin.
The seeds can be saved for baking and eating. Then draw your
design on the pumpkin. You can make a scary face, an animal
design, or even a happy face. It is important to let an adult help
you carve out the holes. Finally, light a candle and place it inside.
You are now ready to celebrate Halloween.

Creation of a Storm
Thunder rattles the windows. Lightning
brightens the sky. Winds howl through
the trees. The electricity is knocked
out. Thunderstorms can be exciting or
frightening. Storms can form when two
bodies of the air come together. One wind lifts moisture high up in
the air. This is called an updraft. The wind's moisture runs into a
warmer layer of air above it and stops. It is like a helium balloon
hitting the ceiling. The moisture condenses into rain droplets and
spreads out because it can't rise anymore. The droplets become
heavy and fall as rain. As the rain falls, it creates a wind that goes
down with it called a downdraft. When downdrafts and updrafts
come into contact, lightning and thunder happen. After a while,
the updrafts stop, and the storm clouds drop all of their rain. The
thunder quiets down and stops. The winds calm. The storm is over.

1. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Kinds of storms B. Effects of storms
C. How storms are created D. How to survive a storm
2. What can form when two bodies of the air come together?

Tsunamis

A tsunami is a great, big ocean

wave. It can move very fast and grow
to be very tall. A tsunami can race
across the ocean at 500 miles per
hour. Some tsunamis grow to be 100
feet tall. A tsunami is very destructive.
A big tsunami can destroy houses and towns. Most tsunamis are
created by earthquakes. The earthquake happens out in the middle
of the ocean. The ground under the ocean shakes and creates a big
wave. It is similar to a person dropping a rock in a pond. The rock
makes the water splash. Tsunamis are not very big in deep water.
Once they reach land, then they begin to grow. A tsunami can suck
in water as it gets closer to land. It pulls in water from the beach.
This makes the tsunami get bigger and stronger. Tsunami means
"great harbor wave" in Japanese.
