Octopus
Dishonesty
Katie's mom could always tell when Katie wasn't telling the
truth. Of course, she didn't have to use that talent often. Katie was
rarely untruthful. One morning after breakfast, Katie told her mom
that she wasn't feeling well. Katie said that maybe she should stay
home from school. Her mom looked at her without saying anything.
Katie grew nervous as her mom stared into her eyes. Then Katie's mom
put her hand on Katie's forehead. She said she didn't think Katie had
a fever. Katie shook her head. No, she didn't have a fever. Her mom
asked her if her stomach hurt. Katie shook her head again.
No, she didn't have a stomachache either. Then Katie's
mom asked her if she had finished her homework before
going to bed. Katie admitted that she hadn't. Katie's mom
knew why she didn't want to go to school.

Art Class
Nicki loved the art class. She looked forward
to it all day long.
She couldn't understand why some of her friends complained
about it. To her, it was the only time she felt she could be herself.
In art class, there was no wrong answer. There were no timed
tests. She liked drawing best. Sometimes she spent hours at home
drawing objects in her house. She would sketch flowers, tables, her
parents, and their cat. Today she could tell something exciting was
planned. Her art teacher, Mr. Martin, was smiling in the doorway.
He explained to the class that they were going to have an art show.
He had picked several drawings that they had been working on and
hung them around the room. He was going to invite their family
and friends to come and buy the drawings. The money that the
class made would help pay for more art supplies. Nicki was thrilled
to see that not one but two of her drawings were hanging on the
wall. She couldn't believe it! She was a real artist. Her parents were
going to be so proud.

PART 7: READING COMPREHENSION
Creation of a Storm
Thunder rattles the windows. Lightning
brightens the sky. Winds howl through
the trees. The electricity is knocked
out. Thunderstorms can be exciting or
frightening. Storms can form when two
bodies of the air come together. One wind lifts moisture high up in
the air. This is called an updraft. The wind's moisture runs into a
warmer layer of air above it and stops. It is like a helium balloon
hitting the ceiling. The moisture condenses into rain droplets and
spreads out because it can't rise anymore. The droplets become
heavy and fall as rain. As the rain falls, it creates a wind that goes
down with it called a downdraft. When downdrafts and updrafts
come into contact, lightning and thunder happen. After a while,
the updrafts stop, and the storm clouds drop all of their rain. The
thunder quiets down and stops. The winds calm. The storm is over.
