Module IV: Fire safety System for Hotels

ACTIVE FIRE PROTECTION ASAP
An active fire protection system is a set of measures and equipment designed to
detect(fire, smoke and temperature), control, suppress, or extinguish fires in a
building or other structure. Unlike passive fire protection systems, which are
primarily focused on containing fires and limiting their spread, active fire protection
systems are proactive in directly combating fires to minimize damage and protect
lives.
Active fire protection systems typically include:
1.Fire Detection Systems: These systems detect the presence of fire or smoke
and raise alarms to alert occupants and emergency responders. They can use
various technologies such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, flame detectors, or
combination detectors. detectors are set to activate at a specific temperature,
typically ranging from 135°F (57°C) to 190°F (88°C). There are different types of
fire detectors Ionization Smoke Detectors, Photoelectric Smoke Detectors, Dual
Sensor Smoke Detectors etc.

2. Fire suppression system: Automatic Fire Sprinkler System consist of a

network of pipes containing water under pressure and strategically placed
sprinkler heads. When a fire is detected, typically by heat activating a sprinkler
head, it releases water directly onto the fire or its surrounding area, helping to
suppress or extinguish the flames.
a) Sprinkler Systems: Automatically activate when a certain temperature
threshold is reached, releasing water to extinguish or control the fire.

Sprinkler systems in hotels must be designed and installed in accordance with

the requirements in Part 4 of the NBC 2016. This includes factors such as the
layout and spacing of sprinkler heads, the hydraulic design of the system, and
compliance with relevant standards and guidelines.
However, common types of sprinkler systems used in hotels include:
• Wet Pipe Sprinkler Systems: These systems always contain water in the
pipes, ready to discharge immediately upon activation.
• Dry Pipe Sprinkler Systems: These systems use pressurized air or nitrogen to
hold water back from the sprinkler piping. Water is released into the piping
network and discharged through sprinkler heads when a sprinkler activates,
and the air pressure drops.
