The vision for the Barcelo Market and its environment is in fact the sum of various different

innovations: an urban complex featuring elements of differing scale and function which are required
to transform quite remarkably a densely inhabited and central zone of Madrid. The Temporary
Market has been conceived as a recyclable complex which, despite its provisional nature, is able to
prompt a new perception of its urban surroundings. Situated in Plaza del Arquitecto Ribera, on top
of an underground car park, the idea of the project evokes traditional markets in public squares
consisting in self-contained structures on a single level which can be used in a variety of different
ways. Given the need of hosting the many stalls of the former market, the complex is made of six
pentagonal constructions, of different heights and sizes, thus avoiding excessive volume with
respect to the surrounding buildings.

Barcel Temporary Market

by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos
17 March 2010
Called Barcel Temporary Market, the structures remain in place while a series of new buildings for the area are
under construction, including a shopping centre, sports centre and library.

,
, , .
The temporary market is made up of six connected buildings with pentagonal footprints, each clad in translucent
polycarbonate panels.

,
.
These structures will be reused elsewhere in the city once the permanent buildings are in place.
BARCEL MARKET
The new Barcel market and its surroundings area project is in fact the result of various other projects: An urban
combination of different scale and programme elements that have come together to significantly transform a
dense central area of Madrid. The idea originates from the definition of new areas that connect and link the
different structures and foreseen functions of the market, shopping centre, sports centre, public library, car parks,
temporary market and outdoor areas. The built-up complex is made up of three independent structures joined to a
new public square.
The Market nucleus and heart of the whole operation- is conveyed as being an autonomous structure, which is
located at the confluence point where its different faades open out onto the calle Meja Lequerica and calle

Beneficiencia. Its main attraction is an indoor shopping arcade with contrasting vertical symmetry inspired by
large urban shopping centres from the past, that concentrate the complexs vertical and horizontal traffic. The
sports pavilion rises up over the market. Its roof is actually a large elevated square from which the roof tops of
Madrid can be made out. The new public library overlooks the school playground built right beside to become part
of an urban complex. Its materials and structure are the same as those of the market and sports centre.
The geometric and physical appearance of the different buildings and their faades confirm that despite their
different functions the new buildings belong to the same time period and place. A faade made up of large pieces
of moulded glass, -white and opaline- unifies the new public buildings style -market, sports centre, library- to
illuminate and unify the whole complex. The style of the public areas in the plazas de Alonso Martnez and
Barcel, as well as that of the neighbouring streets, their mutual paving and street furniture, transmit the feeling
of the past radical subtle change that has taken place in the neighbourhood.
Like an escalated version of civic life, where places to live, study, teach, go shopping, have fun, do sport, read, go
for a walk or relax have a common setting, the new buildings and outdoor areas come together in an surprise
puzzle in which every single different piece only makes sense when they are all put other in their exact precise
place.
Temporary Market
The building of the temporary market that will be used when the construction work of the new buildings is in
progress, is intended to be an urban facility which can be recycled and that conveys the inspired ability of a
temporary operation to change with its environment. As it has to house the numerous outlets that have to be
maintained, the building is divided up into six pentagonal shaped floor areas, that are set at different heights and
have different lay outs, thus preventing it being out of proportion with regard to the surrounding buildings.
A linear double height structure along la calle Beneficiencia will be used for the handling areas, warehouses, cold
storage rooms and installations. One of this buildings fundamental features is its exterior facade made of glazed
polycarbonate that covers the polygonal cylinders to let natural light filter through during the day and which
become huge lanterns lighting up the square in the evening. Once the construction work has been completed,
these cylinders will be taken down and could be used somewhere else in the city, so that the new Barcel square,
whose paving, landscaping and street furniture blends in with the surroundings, will round off the change made to
this historical areas of Madrid.

The temporary market is just one of the new additions to the surrounding areas development,
which includes a new shopping centre, sports centre, public library, car parks, and public
outdoor area.
During the construction work of neighbouring buildings and facilities the market is intended to
act as an urban facility which can be removed and recycled once it is no longer needed.
The temporary market is divided up in to six pentagonal shaped floor areas, each housing a
differing number of stalls and outlets.
Each polygonal market area has been designed with differing heights, dimensions, and floor
layouts in a response to the proportions of the surrounding buildings.
The exterior facade of the building is glazed in an opaque polycarbonate allowin g natural light
to filter in to the markets polygonal cylinders during the day, and at night transforms the market
in to huge lanterns lighting up the square.
Once construction work of the markets surrounding development has reached completion the
cylinders have been designed so as they can be taken down and relocated to an alternative
location in Madrid.

The project of new Barcel Market and its surroundings must represent truly the sum of several different projects:
an urban complex of elements from different scales and various programs, whose goal is obviously to transform
dense central area of Madrid. The proposal is generated from the definition of new voids, able to put their
communication and relationship between the different volumes and the expected use of the market, mall, sports
center, library, parking, outdoor areas and temporary market . The whole building is divided into three
independent volumes related to a new public square. The Market core and origin of the whole operation is
expressed as a volume-independent, located at the confluence of roads and Meja Lequerica Beneficencia,
against which opens with its distinct facades. The protagonist is a path inside the tunnel-handed vertical
proportion, evoking some of the great urban commercial areas of the past and concentrate the vertical and
horizontal movement of the complex. The pavilion space is floating above the sports market, where coverage is
used as a large square high, from which you can see the rooftops of Madrid. The new public library passes over
the schoolyard, which takes upon himself to form part of a complex urban environment, while sharing the
materials and volume with the market and the sports center.

The expression of different geometries and materials and coatings anuncio buildings that unlike most varied
use-the new building belongs to the same time and same place. An outer coating of glass pieces molded in largeand white opal unifies the treatment of all new public buildings market, sports center, library giving lightness
and unity to the complex. The treatment of public spaces in the square in Alonso Martnez and Barcel, as well as
the adjacent streets, its common paving and street furniture, leads individuals to perceive the transformation that
took place in their district, both radical and subtle .

Like a smaller version of city life, where space to live, study and teach, buy, play, play sports, read, walk or stand
are part of a common scene, new buildings and areas of open space form a unexpected puzzle in which each
separate item assumes meaning only when all other elements were placed in their precise position.

1.Market

The axis of the new market is formed by a covered gallery of great height, where rapid escalators up and down
over a terrace and trade of higher plant invites visitors to the building across the street to the new square Mejia
Lequerica back . Large glass elements hint at the local market, which is provided with address in parallel bands
compared to the large internal routes. So if you enter the market from the street and from the square, the vertical
load is perceived access rights to the spatial dimension, in three floors, covering the space. A set of stairs

teaching as a parallel to the tunnel connecting the different levels, while a compact core of elevators, bathrooms
and elevators connects the plant throughout its height, including the warehouse basement, the area of loading
and unloading and parking. The outer curtain is composed of linear pieces of white glass shaped like a U, 50 cm
wide, which form a continuous skin that wraps all the gleaming buildings of the complex.

2.Sport Center

The new sports center is located Barcel rooftops of Madrid. Indeed, the market coverage constitues a large
square of 1500m2, where children play, young people do sport, the biggest sunbathe or simply overlook to watch
the city skyline. A group of independent communication and a long ramp electricity, allow to reach this level,
where plus meet the changing rooms, bathrooms and the area of control and access to space sports. The pupils
of the nearby college access directly from the schoolyard through a connection underground. A bar of glass is
produced under a great platform, above which lies the pavilion. The core communication reaches the last level,
dividing the space into two areas: the gym that overlooks the street and propane Barcel said, sports pavilion,
which looks through an aperture of 32 meters in length to terraces of the city.

3-Library

The library generates through its linear volume and its complementarity to the existing school, a new block.
Conceived as a bridge building, less free space to expand the yard to play for the college, supporting the two
bodies that harbor the nuclei of communication, access and services. In this way, the two higher plants allow the
longitudinal location of spaces for reading and meeting arrangements for the program, with different
configurations. This book shares the outer coating material with the market and the sports area, thus allowing the
presence of natural light and interior halls degradada reading.

4-Market Thunder

The construction of market timing, which will remain in service during the execution of work on new buildings, was
designed as an urban exposure recyclable, able to express the processing that can cause a temporary
intervention on its surroundings inmediata . Confronted with the need of housing places of sale that would have
been maintained, the whole is fragmented into six volumes by pentagonal and different heights and sizes, in ways
that avoid the presence of a volume too large compared to the surrounding buildings . A linear body double
height, lined the road to qualify, Albergaria the load and unload goods, warehouses, cold stores and equipment.
The essence of this exhibition and its outer coating of polycarbonate translucent surrounds the polygonal cylinder
allowing light to pass natualre during the day and becoming large lanterns illuminating the square at night. Once
the yard, the cylinders of the market storm disassemble and can be placed somewhere else in the city, shaped to
the new square Barcel, with its flooring, and furniture aggiardinate urban areas, completar processing capacity
later in this historic area of Madrid.

5-outdoor spaces

The district will retrieve new spaces for pedestrians. The cars were limited to the two roads and Barcel Lequerica
Mejia, while the granite floor and areas aggiardinate, lining the road Beneficencia, interstitial urban spaces and
new open spaces. Pizza in Martinez Alos, the vehicular traffic is kept only in correspondence of road axis,
creating a large living urban trees. The slight slope of the area defining areas with floor plans of play and rest,
which arise between the trees currently existing and new plantation. Urban design responds to the same system
with polygonal geometry which is designed market timing, thereby establishing a parallel reading throughout the
course of implementation, which the visitor can recognize unconsciously.
