Introduction: Emery is a very hard mineral used as a powder for polishing. It is a natural oxide of aluminium (Corundum, AI2O3) with various impurities like iron or magnesium, silicate etc. in small quantities. Emery is one of the widely used abrasive in the form of granules or powder for shaping, cleaning or polishing surfaces. Emery cloth/paper is commonly known as sand paper (Abrasive paper, Flint glass paper etc.) and comes under coated abrasives. They are made by coating one side of backing material such as cloth or paper with an adhesive which is usually hide glue (animal glue) or a phenolic resin. The size of the grain (emery) bounded to the backing is depending upon the application of that emery paper i.e. the size of the grains is adjusted according to the nature of the surface. The backing provides stability for the coated abrasive products. The typical backing materials are paper, cloth, fibre, combination of paper, cloth and fibre, wood, metal, nylon and plastic. Keeping pace with the development of industry, the demand for emery paper/cloth is significant. Emery cloth/paper had contributed considerably to the development of various industries particularly paint, varnish and automobile. The emery paper/ cloth, which is superior in quality will play an important role in fine polishing. While the manufacturing process is comparatively simple, the industry nevertheless is a highly technical one. But these requires practical experience for obtaining a particular grade of emery cloth. Properties: The use of emery powder categorised on the properties of abrasives gummed on it. The following properties are the factors which show the quality of emery grains. Like all the abrasive materials emery is also very hard and thus shows high resistance to mechanical forces. The hardness of emery is. 8.5-9 moh's scale. It possess a very high resistance being scratched. Besides hardness it has a very good toughness property. The property of a emery paper is depending on not only the quality of emery used but also the paper (backing medium) and the gum (adhesive). The selection of adhesive and the paper is decided by the field of application of the product. For metal polishing emery paper, the adhesive should be based on synthetic materials so that better bonding of abrasive materials to the backing medium. Uses & Applications: Coated abrasive products like emery paper (sand paper) in the form of sheets, discs and strips are used extensively for finishing the surfaces of metal, wood and plastic products and equipments. But the main use of emery cloth is to smooth the wooden furniture prior to painting or polishing. Various metal castings, sheets and nonferrous equipment parts are also finished (smoothed) by these products. With the good quality of the product and the versatile application of it, it has become an enterprise of high merit. Market Survey: The demand of emery paper/cloth has significantly increased keeping pace with requirements. The main use of it is in the furniture manufacturing because it is an essential abrasive medium which give shining to the surface of the furniture. There is an ever increasing demand for furniture in the coming years. Cleaning and smoothing of the metal surface is also required for various industrial equipments and hence the demand for emery paper increases. It has a very good export potential also. Exporting includes various abrasive cloths. Corundum (emery) coated cloths/papers flint coated paper, glass or sand coated papers etc. Therefore considering the indigenous and export potential it is a very good profit oriented unit with a high demand. Raw Materials Required: Emery grain, Backing paper and Various types of adhesives. Plant & Machinery Required 1. Gyratory Crusher 2. Grinder to make grain of required size 3. Sieve Separator consisting of various meshes of different sizes. 4. Printing Machine (For printing the trade mark, size of the grain etc. on the paper) 5. Adhesive coating roller 6. Grain application equipment (gravity type). 7. Drying unit 8. Roller to roll the cured emery paper 9. Cutter 10. Boiler 11. Storage tanks for emery and storage vessels for gum (adhesive) 12. Other storage tanks 13. Motor and pump 14. Miscellaneous equipments including testing equipments. Manufacturing Process: The manufacturing process involves a number of steps. But mainly we can divide the entire process into two stages. (1) Conversion of natural abrasives into loose abrasives. The abrasive material is first crushed to produce sharp irregular particles. Jaw and gyratory crushers are used for primary crushing. Double rolls crushers are used for secondary crushing. Using a magnetic separator, the iron impurities are removed. Washing is an optimal process that removes any dust. The particles are then separated accordingly to size using sieves of different mesh sizes. The grit thus obtained is used for the manufacture of coated and bonded products. For a home scale manufacturer of emery cloth can avoid this stage and can use different sized grit available with raw material suppliers. (2) Coating of grain (emery) and curing: Previously prepared cloth/paper backing are used for the bonding of the loose abrasive grain for the production of emery cloth. Preparation of cloth involves stretching, dyeing and filling the pores. For a continuous process large rolls of backing materials are used. Printing the trade name, size of grit, and type of grain on one side of the backing material is done with a fast-drying ink. First coating of adhesive is carried out then followed by the abrasive coating. Gravity or electrostatic methods are used for this. In open-coat products, grain is spread from a hopper by gravity and the backing is not completely covered by the grain. In electrostatic coating, electromagnet pull the grain into the adhesive and thus a closed coat product is formed. Pre-drying in a heating unit and second coat of adhesive are the next operations. The final drying (curing) in a heating unit and the rerolling complete the continuous process. The large rolls can be stored until needed or taken to cutting into sheets, discs or strips.
