METHOD STATEMENT

Version : R0
Project : Proposed A&A Works at 2/F – 5/F, Block D&E and 3/F Gateway II
Location : 5/F Skylight at Atrium (GL: C-E / 10-12)

1) Introduction
This Method Statement intends to briefly stipulate the design of the method for constructing the skylight, including
the Design Code and Material Specifications, Steel installation, Glass works, Cladding Works and Relevant Safety
issues.

2) Design Code and Material Specifications

The design of the glass wall is subject to the following codes and specifications:

a) Structural Steel
All structural steel shall be minimum grade S275JR complying with BS EN 10025 or BS EN 10210 Class 1.
All connections between steel work to be fillet welded with strength of Min 220MPa to BS EN ISO 2560:
2005 and minimum leg length of the welding shall be 4mm. All steel works shall be carried out in accordance
with the Hong Kong Building (Construction) Regulations 1990 and the other relevant design standard and
codes are stated as follows:

Load Design : Code of Practice for Dead and Imposed Load 2011
Steel Design : Coad of Practice for Structural Use of Steel 2005
Steel Grade : S275 to BS EN 10025 and BS EN 10210 Class 1
Galvanization : BS EN ISO 1461

b) Tempered Glass
All tempered glass shall be subject to minimum allowable bending stress of 50 MPa with full heat soak
process to PNAP APP037.
The tempered glass used in the project includes:
i) 32.28mm thick laminated low iron tempered glass (15TG+2.28SGP+15TG)

c) Structural Sealant and Weather Sealant

Manufacturer’s instructions shall be strictly followed for application. Samples shall be sent to the
manufacturer for system review and testing which include the Print Review, Compatibility Test and Adhesion
Test.
d) Manufacturer’s instructions shall be strictly followed and the adhesion and cohesion properties of the weather

sealant shall be subject to ASTM C 920. The sealant used in the project shall be:
i) Dow Corning 795 (Structural Sealant)
ii) Dow Corning 791 (Weather Sealant)

e) Anchor Bolts
i) Hilti HST-R M10 (Connection to the brackets)

f) Screw and Bolt

All screw and bolt shall be minimum grade A4-50 (#316).

3) Steel Installation

Following are the brief working procedures for structural steel installation:
a) Detailed site survey shall be done prior to the fabrication of the materials
b) Inspect the structural opening to make sure the openings are tight and the corners are square
c) Hack off the loose particles to ensure the structure are sound enough to receive anchoring
d) Mark the working location with fully surveyed setting out to locate and determine the anchor points
e) Drill the points for stud anchor bolts for specified anchor embedment and diameter
f) “Hilti” HST-R M10 Anchor is used for all base plate.
g) Install stud anchors in the drilled holes with the steel brackets
h) Set the fabricated glazing bracket and hollows with the pre-determined setting out in the completed openings.
i) Adjust the channels for plumb, square, alignment and twist. Pay attention to the ratio of falling for each of the
skylight pane.
j) Perform the welding works in accordance with specifications.
k) The steel frames are ready for installation of glass after the welding inspection

4) Glass Works

a) All glass shall be fully tempered and based on the recommendations of BS 6262: 1982 and APP037. All the
glass shall be manufactured by a factory with ISO 9001 quality assurance certification. A Quality Assurance
Scheme (QAS) and Quality Supervision Plan (QSP) shall be submitted for consent prior to fabrication. The
proposed type and specifications for the glass used in this project is “low iron laminated (Sentry Glass Plus
Interlayer - SGP) tempered glass”. The relevant data sheet and glass manufacturer’s information are attached
with this outlines.
b) After fixing all the steel brackets, the skylight glass will be installed. The installation will be carried out with
the help of suitable hydraulic cranes and necessary machinery.
c) “3M” glazing tape should be used to separate the structural sealant.
d) Structural sealant shall be applied to the skylight panes after setting the glazing tape while the weather sealant
shall be applied on all flashing and screw joints.

e) Safety must be the top priority when working on a roof.

5) RC Curb and Additional Waterproofing Works

Extra care and attention should be paid to the RC Curb and Waterproofing works of the skylight:

a) Curb mounted skylights are cast on site and make sure the curb is square and provides the correct length,
width and height for the skylight per plans and specifications.
b) It is recommended that a waterproofing membrane should be applied between the interconnection of the RC
curb and skylight flashing to provide better waterproof capability (Pic 1):
