INTRODUCTION –
Working on roofs is always a high-risk activity. Approximately 50% of fatal falls are from or
through roofs and frequently involve fragile materials. Any fall from a roof will inevitably
result in a serious injury and the risks are substantial however long or short the duration of
work. High safety standards are essential for roof access/work and the nature of the
precautions required must be assessed for each individual job. This procedural guidance sets
out responsibilities, precautions and provides general guidance for good practice relevant to
all roof access/work.

ROOFING
9.1.1 Preparation
Before sheeting, all the tasks below must be completed: - The Period Completion Report of
mainframes must be approved and signed off by Client. - All column baseplates must be
filled grouting strong enough for support loading. - Frames must be completed painting
touch up and checked.
- Insulation sheet will be laid on the strip of installed wire mesh or NFR - NFR is installed by
sticking on 02 size tape stuck on to the top face of purlins. - Roof sheets must be installed
right after completing each strip of insulation sheet to avoid the insulation sheet being
damaged by rain or wind.
9.1.4 Lifting roof sheet:
Roof sheet will be lifted on to the roof by crane or manually by workers. Roof sheets will be
piled up to set of 10 sheets then being tied together by soft ropes at space maximum = 4m -
With roof sheet length <25m , 01 crane was applied - With roof sheet length >25m , 02
cranes was applied
- The spreader bars will be applied for lifting purpose. - The lifted roof sheets will be
arranged to adjacent bays, pilled, and tied carefully to purlins until being installed (b).
Lifting manually by workers - Roof sheet will be moved to right position and pulled sheet by
sheet on to the roof by workers sitting on the rafter with PPE attached to static lines. - Roof
sheets lifted on to the roof will be arranged to adjacent bays, pilled and tied safely to purlins
before installation.
9.1.5 Install roof sheets - Roof sheets which are waiting for installation will be tied to purlins
by ropes. - Before install roof sheet, safety net was installed for safety reason.
Roof sheet must be installed by only 01 way from predetermined end gable of the building,
this end gable should be closed to the Rolling machine of position of fabricated roof sheet to
avoid moving too much, this might cause damages to them. - Roof sheet will be installed one
by one manually by workers - KV35, KR32 roof sheet will be attached to purlins by screws
while KSS600 by clips and seaming after completing checking. - All the accessories related
to installation sheeting and the order of installation will be complied as sketch below
- Locate the center of the first major rib exactly over steel line or as indicated in the Erection
drawing attach panels (A) and (C) and then attach peak panel (B) - Each side of KIMAYA
panel and the KIMAYA peak panel must be run in conjunction with each other to ensure
correct alignment. - Refer to other sections of this manual for details relating to eave
alignment of roof panels, sealer application and fastener types. - All damaged paint finishes
are to be retouched to prevent rusting.
Method Statement for Sheeting Installation
In the event a screw is installed in the wrong location or should a screw break during the
driving process, remove the screw and install one of the larger diameters to prevent leaking. -
Concentrated heavy loads (personnel or material) occurring on the roof during construction
shall be distributed uniformly over a large area in such a manner as to prevent damage to
building components. - All metal shavings occurring as a result of drilling operations on the
roof are to be removing in such a manner as to prevent damage or staining of roof finish.”
9.1.6 Walking On The Roof
- When walking parallel to the ridge line, step directly over a purblind NOT STEP ON A
PANEL MAJOR RIB and DO NOT WALK ON ANY PANEL THAT HAS NOT BEEN
PROPERLY SECURED TO THE STRUCTURE. - When walking up-slope or down-slope,
step to either side of a major rib. - A life line is to installed along to sheeting way for worker
hooking their PPE to Life line for roof sheeting - After completion roof sheet, life lines will
be dismantle and re fix 02 ends to major ribs of roof.
9.2 CLADDING
9.2.1 Preparation
- Wall sheets were fabricated in Plant and shipped to job site in packages. - Before installing
sheeting, make sure all girts and sag rods were completed.
A set on scaffolding will be use for cladding, a pulley will be installed on scaffolding, and
this allows pulling wall sheet safely by people on the ground or on the scaffolding. - Wall
panel will be moved to their position along the wall to install.
9.2.2 Lifting wall sheet:
- Drill a hole with dia. of 12mm at the middle of the wall panel 150mm far from the top for
hooking wire rope to the wall panel. - Lift up and adjust panel to right position before
attached to the girt. - Workers working on scaffolding must wear PPE attached to
scaffolding, which is also kept stable by struts tube
to the ground.
9.2.3 Install cladding
- A steel ladder as sketch will be used for girt installation. - Worker stand on ladder which
stand on ground and attached to girts to avoid fall down , will fix cladding to the girts - Need
to be install a thread to make sure the screws were installed straight - Platform for cladding
must be flat strong enough. In case this requirement is not met, KIMAYA supervisor have to
contact to Client immediately to solve by RFI.

Maintenance and Storage –
1) The roof storage should be regularly inspected and any foreign matter such as leaves,
grass, and other deposits should be removed.
2) Special attention should be given to gutters, ensuring that they are clean and not
blocked thus allowing the free flow of water. This maintenance shall be at owners’
expenses after the installation work is Completed.
3) It is advisable to take all the precautions and useful provisions necessary so as not to
cause any puncturing of all flat parts or deformation of all joints. care must also shall
be taken to clean the footwear prior to walking on the roof.
Method Statement for Sheeting Installation
4) The zinc sheets, coils, and formed pieces must be stored in a well-ventilated, sheltered
and dry area where temperature variation is kept to a minimum.
5) Temperature variations can cause condensation build-up, that in turn will cause zinc
hydroxide (white rust) to form. Ensure that the zinc is stored in an area without great
temperature variations. Zinc hydroxide forms when the surface of zinc comes into
contact with humidity without carbon dioxide. Zinc hydroxide provides no protection
and leaves unattractive, indelible marks on the zinc.
6) The sheets, coils and formed pieces should be separated from the ground by pallet or
similar storage device to allow sufficient ventilation of the zinc.
Handling and Storage Appropriate handling and storage of profiled metal roofing and
cladding, translucent and transparent roofing products plus roofing accessories, is important
in order to prevent damage which in turn will limit performance once installed. The following
guidelines should be strictly followed in order to ensure the project is completed satisfactorily
and meets product warranty conditions
Acceptance of materials
• Visually inspect and physically count the materials on arrival at site to ensure they are in a
damage-free condition. If there are any discrepancies, contact Roofing Industries staff prior to
storage or installation of the products.
• Check that all delivered materials correspond with the order and particular care should be
taken to ensure materials meet the durability requirements of the NZ Building Code, location
and environmental conditions for which they are to be installed. If there are any
discrepancies, contact Roofing Industries staff prior to storage or installation of the products.
Unloading materials
• Do not use a trailer or truck tip tray/deck to slide the materials onto the ground
• Do not drag sheets across each other, or over rough surfaces such as the ground, Purlins,
roof edges etc which is likely to cause degradation of product surfaces. It is advisable to “peel
and lift” the sheets off the bundle rather than slide
• Handle roofing products with care at all times. Sheets longer than 3.0m should be handled
by two persons, and carried on edge to avoid buckling.
• Where necessary to comply with Health and Safety requirements or to prevent damage to
the pack, nylon slings or strops in association with a load tested spreader bar and tag lines
should be used to prevent damage to the edges of sheet.
On site storage
• Ensure sheeting and roof accessories do not come into contact with dirt, cement, concrete,
lime, mortar, fertiliser, chemicals and other substances which may be detrimental to the
product
Method Statement for Sheeting Installation
• Stored sheeting whether at ground level or on the roof is susceptible to wind damage, and
care should be taken to ensure products are secure. It is advisable to store the sheeting so that
it is clear of possible vehicle damage and available in the order it will be installed
, • Store sheets under a water resistant cover, clear of the ground and providing adequate air
flow around the bundle. Evenly position the sheeting on untreated dunnage spaced evenly at
(maximum 0.900mm) to prevent deformation. Packs should be no greater than 1000mm high
and on a slight incline to allow water runoff
• It is important that bulk insulation products are kept dry at all times, as moisture will affect
the insulation value and can cause premature metal and timber degradation. Any Insulation
products that do become wet should be replaced immediately
• Although it is not advisable to walk on packs of sheeting, in some cases this is totally
unavoidable , if this is the case only soft , flat sole shoes free of dirt and grime must be worn,
and particular care taken to walk in the vicinity of the dunnage-line
Presence of moisture between sheets
• If sheeting has become wet during transportation or whilst in storage, it must be dried by
filleting or cross stacking to ensure air circulation between the sheets. If sheeting has been
wet in storage for a period greater than 3 days, they should not be used Translucent
,Transparent roofing and Rooflights
• All roof lights, transparent and translucent roofing irrespective of type should be handled
and stacked with care as film surfaces are easily scratched, and heavy stacks can damage
lower sheets. All roof lights should be stored flat, the correct way up as indicated by label or
inkjet printing and , on 75mm wide battens not more than 1.2m apart. Stacks should not be
higher than 1000mm, and should be covered and protected from rain and sun. Thermoplastic
sheets can overheat and deform in a stack, and exposed stacks can permanently discolour, due
to action of sun and water. If moisture becomes trapped between the sheeting immediate
filleting of sheeting must be undertaken to allow thorough drying of both surfaces of each
sheet. Failure to do so will ensure staining of the sheet and voiding of warranty Strippable
protection film
• If sheeting is protected by strippable film, exposure to sunlight or ultra violet must be
prevented until such time the product is installed with the film being removed immediately
after installation. It is sound practice to remove the protection film such as under laps,
fasteners, and flashings prior to installation as this maybe impossible later Roof Loading
• Where necessary to comply with Health and Safety requirements or to prevent damage to
the pack, nylon slings or strops in association with a load tested spreader bar and tag lines
should be used to prevent damage, particularly to the edges of sheet packs. Bundles must be
placed adjacent to the portal frame and not mid span on the purlins. Bundles must be placed
so that their weight is spread over the entire area of the roof and should be positioned with the
laps in the direction of laying.
•Take particular care with long length flashings and rainwater goods so that wind and load
stress damage does not occur Walking on the roof structure and roofing
Method Statement for Sheeting Installation
• Do not assume that it is safe or permissible to stand on any roof structure or roof cladding
material. Refer to the point load information contained in the load span graphs in the product
literature. Walk along purlin lines or walk no further than 300mm from the purlin-line at all
times with the feet placed in the pan except where profile prohibits this in which case spread
loading over at least 2 ribs. If this is not possible walk planks should be provided and used.
Take particular care when walking on Aluminium and light gauge roofing. Do not walk on
translucent/transparent roof sheeting. Where it is necessary to use the roof as a regular access
way, specifically constructed walkways which are compatible with the roof cladding must be
provided.
Safety Precautions to be taken while standing seam roofing -
Workers Can Fall While Roofing
Roofers installing standing seam metal roofs risk permanent injury or death from falls. Even
experienced roofers are exposed to unpredictable fall hazards caused by sudden gusts of
wind, loose roofing materials and surfaces that become slick when wet. Taking appropriate
fall protection measures reduces risks and saves lives.
The safety officer must provide a training program for each worker who might be exposed to
fall also use of PPE is also mandatory.
Installing Standing Seam Metal Roofs Safely: Important Steps
Before beginning the job, focus on identifying fall protection needs. Survey the roof to
determine if there are pre-installed anchorages available that can be used. If not, then begin
planning immediately to identify those systems needed to protect workers from falls and have
them in place before the workers report to the job.
Preparing the Work Site
Safeguarding against hazards is as important to preventing fatal falls as having good fall
protection equipment. Before work begins on a roof, employers need to prepare the site to
protect workers from situations that could cause them to fall .
Accessing the roof: Employers should ensure that safe roof access and egress is established
and make sure that workers know how to get up and down in a way that minimizes the risk of
falling. Extension ladders must extend at least 3 feet above the roof level to ensure safe
access to the roof. Ladders must also be secured when they are used in locations where they
maybe displaced.

JOB SAFETY ANALYSIS – SHEETING INSTALLATION WORKS
The Sheeting installation work is essential activity in construction. The steel structure fit up ,
assembly and erection process involves grinding, cutting and welding at ground level as well
at height. The hazards associated with sheets handling, transportation and erection operation
vary at each location depending upon type of material, different sizes of steel structures and
other work conditions. A JHA is required for all these activities as the risk levels are very
high, sheeting erection being essential activity, historically experienced significant rate of
accidents causing injuries & illnesses. Secondly these steel structure erections can be
overlooked when preparing safety plans. The erection activity ranging from mobilizing &
setting up the equipment, material and the facility till demobilization of the same. Keeping
the view of the same, this article focuses on significant hazards and controls involved
exclusively during the steel structure erection.
The following list shows hazards that have been identified and the controls that need to be
