1.0 Scope, Purpose and Objective

1.1 The Scope of this method statement covers the fabrication, installation and
insulation of GI Duct Works. The purpose of the documentation emanating
from this statement is to ensure that quality control objectives are maintained
and accurate records are established for all related activities. The objective is to
ensure that the construction plan is executed, controlled and documented in
compliance with the contract drawings and specifications.

3.0 Materials Storage and Handling

3.1 All Duct components shall be carefully off-loaded at site using necessary
manpower / chain block, etc. in such a way that no damage is caused to the
units and accessories.

3.2 Materials will be inspected at off-loading point for any physical damage and
completeness as per order / delivery.

3.3 Should there be any damages / discrepancies found, a report shall be raised,
acknowledged both by the supplier’s representative and Consultant for his
recommendation for immediate action.

3.4 Materials shall be stored in a place free of water and adequately covered to
avoid any accidental damages.

3.5 Duct and components shall be transferred / moved carefully to the installation

site only when required and as per instruction of the Site Engineer.

4.0 Tools and Equipment

4.1 General: Appropriate Scaffoldings, Portable hand drill, Fastening hand tools,
Portable grinder, Sheet metal cutting tools, bender, and Sheet metal hand tools.

4.2 Personnel Protective Equipment: All personnel should wear at all times Safety
shoes, Helmet and coverall. Also when required: Eye & ear protectors, protective
gloves, face mask, ventilation fan and safety harness.

5.0 Fabrication of Ducts

5.1 The normal duct work will be fabricated at the duct shop to the sizes indicated
on the approved shop drawings.

5.2 The components of each duct run will be identified by marking up on the
approved shop drawings and to be issued to the workshop for fabrication.

5.3 The workshop shall mark each fabricated piece with a marker pen with the same
identification on the inside of the duct.

5.4 The ducts will be fitted together from both the inside and outside by duct cleat or
by flange connection.

5.5 All void and gap in ducts will be sealed in terms of DW 142 standards, as per
project specification.

5.6 All joints shall be dressed using rigid channel backing to ensure complete
closing of joints to achieve neat corners.

5.7 All the fire rated ducts will be fabricated & supplied only by the approved ducts
Manufacturer and supplier.

6.0 Installation of Duct Work

6.1 Inspect and ascertain the duct route on site as per approved shop drawings.

6.2 Start marking the location for the supports, drill the prescribe size and depth of
holes, clean the holes and insert the anchor/ expansion bolts.

6.3 Place the Galvanized threaded rod into position. Sizes of rods and spacing of
supports shall be in accordance with DW 142 & QCS.

6.4 All duct works shall be supported by means of MS angle bars and the sizes will
be in terms of DW142 standards.

6.5 For vertical duct installation, additional smaller support from the supporting
frame work, if required, shall be provided.

6.6 The installed duct section shall be visually inspected. All the duct works shall be
cleaned thoroughly both internally and externally, free of dust, oil, grease , etc.

6.7 Hold the work and request for Work inspection to the Consultant for approval
and shall be documented prior to insulation work.

7.0 Insulation Procedure

7.1 The insulation process will be carried out strictly in accordance with this
document / project specifications and approved material submittal.

7.2 Insulation material; 25mm thick aluminium foil faced fiberglass boards with
density 48 kg/cu. m for internal areas and 50mm thick, 48kg/cu. m. density

fiberglass insulation for external / exposed areas.

7.3 Check and ensure the external surfaces of the duct to be insulated is dry, and
free from dust or grease. Brush a thin coat of adhesive.

7.4 Measure and cut the insulation sheet to required length to fit around the duct,
making sure that the edges are straight.

7.5 Place the insulation sheet into the desired position. Apply uniform hand pressure
to outside surface of insulation to obtain a good bonding.

7.6 After the insulation is in place, join the seams by separating the cut edges and
applying a thin coat of adhesive on both surfaces.

7.7 Seams of duct joints can be insulated with strips of insulation sheet in the same
manner as described above.

7.8 Seal the longitudinal and butt joints by self - adhesive aluminium tape.

7.9 Ensure that there is no air gap in between the duct and the insulation.

7.10 Cut the insulation at the bottom side of the duct and place high density strips at
the places of supports.

7.11 Cover the insulation with approve glass cloth and approved vapour barrier
shall be applied to make a neat and clean finish.

7.12 Make sure to provide an overlap of 50mm on both the longitudinal and butt
joints while covering with glass cloth.

7.13 Make sure to cut the insulation around the access doors fixed in the ducts and
terminate the glass cloth around the access doors.

7.14 After completion of insulation works, the area shall be cleared from excess
materials. Raise and submit the Work Inspection Request to the Consultant for
approval.

8.0 Safety

8.1 All personnel who are engaged in the fabrication / erection activities shall follow
safety rules and they will use the required personal protective equipment like
helmet, safety shoes, eye protection until the erection works are completed. As a
safety precaution, a safety officer and first aid kit shall be standby and ready
at site during working hours.

10.0 Responsibilities

1. All works associated with above mentioned project is limited to the fabrication,
installation and insulation of GI duct works will be the responsibility of the
Mechanical subcontractor in accordance with their contract.

2. The Project Engineer will have the overall responsibility for the fabrication and
installation.

3. The Site Engineer / Supervisor / Foreman will be in – charge for the execution of
work at site.

4. The QA/QC Engineer will be responsible for the quality control of the fabrication
works, verification of installed material & including documentations.

5. The Safety Officer will be responsible for the implementation of all safe practices at
site including but not limited to personal protective equipment, proper access to work
area, housekeeping, tool box talk, etc. as described in section 8.0, Safety, at all times.
