A PORTUGUESE CHART OF 1492 BY JORGE AGUIAR

I regret that I am unable to be with you here in Coimbra to attend this interesting meeting so I have asked my good friend Dr. Wilcomb E. Washburn, of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, to convey to you these brief remarks on a portolan chart recently donated to the Yale University Map Collection. The chart in question is a large portolan on vellum covering in area the Mediterranean, Atlantic coasts, England, Ireland and the Baltic with the African coast shown to as far south as about Sierra Leone. It measures 770 X 1030 mm. At the extreme western margin or neck of the skin is the following inscription Jorge dagujar me fez em lixboa no anno dominie nostry Jhu xpu de 1492 (George daguiar made me in Lisbon the year of our Lord Jesus Christ, 1492). This fascinating portolan came to the Yale Map Collection as a gift from the widow of W. Redmond Cross, a Yale graduate of 1896 and Keeper of Maps, Yale University Library 1931-39. The gift was made in honor of the 70th anniversary of Mr. Cross's graduation and was one of eight portolan charts presented on this occasion. Mr. Cross was always an enthusiastic collector of early maps but it is not known exactly where or when he acquired the 1492 portolan. It was, however, at least thirty years ago. As you all know, the great significance of this portolan is the fact that it is a signed and dated Portuguese chart fashioned in Lisbon and curiously bearing the most important date in American history it is not, however, another Vinland Map! It is strictly Portugese in style and executation and appears to be the earliest dated and signed Portuguese portolan and possibily the only 15th century one so signed and dated. The cartographer is not in Professor Cortesao's great work, Monumenta Portugaliae Cartographica. It gives the Yale University Library and myself great pleasure to have Dr Washburn announce the acquisition of this chart to you and I have asked him to present to the University of Coimbra, on Yale's behalf, this positive photostat of the portolan which has been made in the same size and scale as the original.

TEIXEIRA DA MOTA. Pela terceira vez, no decurso de uma reunio internacional que os portugueses tm conhecimento da existncia das rarissimas cartas portuguesas quatrocentistas conhecidas. Foi num congresso internacional de geografia que Marcel Destombes revelou a Fontoura da Costa que em Modena havia uma carta portuguesa do ltimo quartel do sculo xv, e foi no congresso internacional dos descobrimentos que em Lisboa, em 1960, V. Bernard nos deu a conhecer a carta de Pro Reinei de c. 1483 que est em Bordus. Agora, pela forma que todos viram, sabemos da at aqui ignorada carta de Jorge de Aguiar de 1492, e os portugueses devem estar gratos a Vietor e Washburn por esta importante revelao. Mais uma carta portuguesa do sculo xv, e mais uma sem graduao de latitudes... No aspecto estilstico, afigura-se particularmente interessante a multiplicidade de tipos de rosas-dos-ventos, sobretudo a dupla representao de rosas de tipo mediterrneo (maiorquino?) e atlntico (com a curiosa escrita dos nomes dos ventos); a dupla figurao na grande rosa central particularmente significativa. Ao mesmo tempo que se vm os traos da origem mediterrnea da cartografia nutica portuguesa, nota-se j um novo estilo, atlntico, sobretudo, com a caracterstica flor-de-lis que encima uma das rosas. tambm de assinalar, numa bandeira logo ao sul da pennsula de Cabo Verde clara aluso doao feita por D. Joo II de parte da Guin ao duque de Viseu D. Manuel, volta de 1486. Tantos motivos de interesse, colhidos apenas em rpida anlise!
