Hiking Vermonts hillsides is a great way
to enjoy a warm spring day, but the Vermont
Fish and Wildlife Department recommends
you check to see if the area youre planning
to hike or climb is open. Eleven cliff areas
are currently closed to protect nesting per-
egrine falcons.
Peregrine nesting activity has been
observed at approximately 40 sites this
spring, said John Buck, Vermont Fish and
Wildlife Department biologist. But, we
only closed the cliffs where theres a chance
of people disturbing the nesting birds.
Cliff areas or portions of cliff areas cur-
rently closed include:
- Barnet Roadcut (Barnet) Rte 5 pullout is
closed
- Bolton Notch (Bolton) Upper Upper
West cliff - access to cliff closed
- Bolton Quarry (Bolton) portions of cliff
closed to climbing
- Deer Leap (Bristol) cliff top closed
- Fairlee Palisades (Fairlee) cliff top
closed
- Marshfield Mt (Marshfield) portions of
cliff closed to climbing
- Nichols Ledge (Woodbury) cliff top closed
- Rattlesnake Point (Salisbury) southern lookout is closed
- Smugglers Notch (Cambridge) access to climbing near
Elephant Head closed
We all enjoy watching wildlife, especially at
this time of year when young animals are appear-
ing. But, the temptation to pick up young wildlife
that seem to be abandoned can do more harm
than good, according to the Vermont Fish &
Wildlife Department.
People often mistakenly assume that young
animals they see alone are helpless, lost or in
trouble and need rescuing. Taking young wildlife
from the wild into a human environment is not a
good idea, and is against the law. The results are
often permanent separation from their mother
and almost always a sad ending for the animal.
- Handling wildlife also involves threats to the
people involved. Diseases as well as angry moth-
ers can pose significant dangers.
- Understanding the behavior of animals in the
spring and early summer can help people resist
the urge to assist wildlife in ways that may do
more harm than good.
- Deer and moose nurse their young at differ-
ent times during the day, and their young are
often left alone for long periods of time. These
animals are not lost. Their mother knows where
they are and will return.
- Young birds on the ground may have left
their nest, but their parents will still feed them.
- Young animals such as fox and raccoon will
often follow their parents. The family of a wan-
dering animal searching for food is usually
nearby but just out of sight to a person happening
upon it.
- Animals that act sick can carry rabies, para-
sites or other harmful diseases. Do not handle
them. Healthy-looking raccoons, foxes, skunks,
and bats also may also be carriers of the deadly
rabies virus even though they do not show symp-
toms.
- Obey signs that restrict access to wildlife
nesting areas, including hiking trails that may be
temporarily closed. Many wildlife species will
not feed or care for their young when people are
close.
- Keep domestic pets indoors, leashed or

- Wheeler Mt (Barton) portions of cliff
closed to climbing and hiking
The areas closed include the portions of
the cliffs where the birds are nesting and the
trails leading to the cliff tops or overlooks,
said Buck. In many cases the lower por-
tions of the trails are still open.
The Vermont Fish and Wildlife
Department partners with Audubon Vermont
to monitor the sites throughout the nesting
season. These sites will remain closed until
August 1, but if a falcon pair doesnt nest or
if the nest is not successful, the sites will be
reopened sooner.
According to Margaret Fowle of Audubon
Vermont, at least 27 peregrine falcon pairs
nested in Vermont during the 2011 season.
Eighteen pairs were successful, producing
at least 38 young falcons.
We appreciate the publics support in
respecting the cliff closures, said Buck.
Its helping to ensure that peregrines remain
part of Vermonts landscape.
Updated information on cliff closures is
listed on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department website:
www.vtfishandwildlife.com or by calling 802-241-3700. You can
report peregrine sightings by calling Vermont Fish and Wildlife or
emailing fwinformation@state.vt.us.

After the Flood, Vermont Recreational Waters
Monitored for Health and Safety
Families Can Unplug at Annual Outdoor Weekend
Eight months after Irene, state environmental
and health officials are monitoring Vermonts
lakes and streams for any lingering health or
safety hazards in recreational waters.
Due to the magnitude of flooding experienced
in many areas of the state, its likely that any
biological or chemical contaminants that may
have been washed in by floodwaters have since
been diluted by the sheer volume of those
waters.
Test results of water samples taken after Irene,
as well as more recent samples from early this
month, generally show bacteria to be below lev-
els of concern. Sampling at many of the states
rivers and lakes will continue throughout the
summer swimming season. Swimmers may
notice that certain lakes remain discolored by
sediment even into the summer, but this is not a
health hazard.
There have been no reports of persistent
chemical contamination following either the
2011 spring floods or flooding from Irene. Any
suspected chemical contamination can be report-
ed 24/7 to the Vermont Spill Team at 802-241-
3888 or 800-641-5005. The appearance of an
oily sheen or discolored sediment could be an
indication of chemical contamination.
Although fish have not been tested, there is no
evidence to suggest that fish caught in Vermont
waters would have higher levels of contaminants
as a result of flooding.
Submerged debris may be the biggest danger
at this point. Boaters and swimmers should be on
the lookout for physical hazards that may be hid-
den under the surface of the water. Building
materials, boat docks and other objects may have
been transported by floodwaters to areas previ-
ously clear.
The potential for algae blooms on lakes and
ponds could be higher this summer due to the
addition of excess nutrients like nitrogen and
phosphorus carried by runoff from land. Most
algae blooms in Vermont are not harmful, but
blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) may produce
toxins. Vermonters are encouraged to report
blue-green algae sightings this summer to the
Health Department at 800-439-8550. For photos
and more information, go to www.healthver-
mont.gov.

Sound like a fun way to spend a summer week-
end? Then sign your family up now for the
Becoming an Outdoor Family Weekend, June
1-3 at Stillwater State Park in Groton.
Your whole family will have fun learning out-
door skills, including tips for wilderness surviv-
al, how to make jams and jellies from wild ber-
ries, cook wild game outdoors or read the for-
ested landscape. Or they can take advantage of
recreational pursuits at the park, located on
Groton Lake in the 28,000-acre Groton State
Forest, such as fly fishing, mountain biking,
shooting sports and trail running. Beginners are
welcome as instruction is provided.
University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and
the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources
Departments of Fish and Wildlife and Forests,
Parks and Recreation collaborate on this annual
event, now in its 15th year, which is designed to
connect families, especially those new to camp-
ing or spending time in nature, with the outdoors.
The cost is $175 per family (up to eight people),
which covers the campsite, workshop instruc-
tion, materials and most equipment.
The registration deadline has been extended to
May 25th. Details and an online registration
form can be found at www.uvm.edu/extension/
outdoorfamily.
The park offers lean-tos, tent and RV sites,
which are assigned on a first-come, first-served
basis. Every effort will be made to accommodate
families that request adjoining sites. Families
should bring their own camping gear and food,
including a side dish, salad or dessert to share at
the Saturday night potluck supper, which fea-
tures moose burgers, hot dogs and hamburgers.
Each camper may sign up for three workshops
with each session offering more than a dozen
different choices, including some geared to
younger children. Topics range from geocaching,
birding by ear, tree identification and kite mak-
ing to introduction to archery, basic firearm
safety and edible, medicinal and useful wetland
plants. Hunter or bow hunter education certifica-
tion also may be earned over the weekend
through the home-study program offered by the
Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.
For more information, contact Lisa Muzzey,
UVM Extension 4-H educator, at (802) 885-
8386 or toll-free at (800) 278-5471. If requiring
a disability-related accommodation to partici-
pate, please call as soon as possible for assis-
tance.

MEMORIAL DAY CLASSIC
Vermont Fish & Wildlife Announces Summer
Course for Educators
Thunder Road Rookie Class of 2012
New Drivers Look to Shake Things Up
Vermonts popular fish and wildlife summer course for teachers
and other educators will be held July 15-20, 2012.
The hands-on field course that gets educators out into Vermonts
streams, forests and wetlands with some of the states leading
experts takes place at the Buck Lake Conservation Camp in
Woodbury.
Now in its 28th year, Fish and Wildlife Management for
Educators, is a one-week, three-credit graduate course taught by
Vermont Fish & Wildlife and other Agency of Natural Resources
staff through Johnson State College.
Wildlife resources are important to all Vermonters in one way
or another, says Fish & Wildlifes Education Coordinator Alison
Thomas. If teachers can get connected with the outdoors and in
turn expose their students, then many of these youngsters will be
able to make informed decisions about Vermont wildlife and their
habitat needs when they become adults.
This course is unique in that it helps teachers from any disci-
pline, whether it is math, language arts, physical education, or
history, to improve their instructional strategies and make their
lesson plans more relevant to their students, says Thomas.
Tuition is $400 for the week -- books, food and overnight
facilities are included. A course description and schedule of
activities are available from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife
Departments website at www.vtfishandwildlife.com under gen-
eral education. You can also contact them by calling (802) 241-
3701 or emailing janet.finn@state.vt.us.
Buck Lake Conservation Camp in located east of Route 14,
north of Woodbury Village.

In 2012 many Thunder Road drivers are making moves to dif-
ferent divisions. Some with little experience, others bearing cham-
pionships. The drivers below are ones to keep a close eye on in the
upcoming season for Rookie of the Year honors.
Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman
Waterbury Centers Jason Woodard will pilot the familiar #68
Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman championship car of Derrick
ODonnell from 2011. Woodard, who was the final champion of
the Junkyard Warriors with nine wins in 2011, will face a steep
learning curve having opted to race in the Tigers as opposed to the
Allen Lumber Street Stocks. With championship experience and a
great car underneath him, he could be a wildcard in 2012.
Greg Adams, Jr. of Hardwick, the 2011 Champion of the Allen
Lumber Street Stocks, also moves to the Bond Auto Tiger
Sportsman division. With five seasons of experience in the Street
Stocks, Adams hopes for a more seamless transition to the Tigers.
Adams knows what it takes to win a close points race after an
electrifying battle with runner-up Nick Pilotte of Jefferson, NH for
the 2011 Street Stock Championship that came down to a last lap
pass. He is one to watch for Rookie of the Year in 2012.
Adams and Woodard will face competition from Georgia, VT
native Josh Payea and Washington, VTs Chris Roberts.
Allen Lumber Street Stocks
After a year hiatus, the third-place point finisher in the Junkyard
Warriors in 2010, Kevin Dodge of Barre, returns to racing action.
Moving up to the Street Stocks, Dodge will rely on the same con-
sistency that brought him success in the Warrior division, but this
time against the higher numbers of cars and more experienced
drivers of the Street Stock division. He has the advantage of driv-
ing a similar car in 2012 though, which will be to his advantage as
he seeks Rookie honors.
Another rookie campaigner for the Street Stocks is Williamstowns
Brock Parrott, who finished second last year in the championship
race in the Junkyard Warrior division. With four career wins under
his belt, Parrot looks to make the jump with ease to the Street
Stocks and challenge for the Rookie of the Year title. Fellow
Junkyard Warrior racers Tommy Elwood, Justin Town, Paul Grant,
Kevin Wheatley and Daniel Brassard, as well as invaders Dean
Switser, Jr., and Emily Packard will all compete for Allen Lumber
Street Stock Rookie of the Year honors.
The Thunder Road season continues at the Mekkelsen RV
Memorial Day Classic on Sunday May 27. Gates open at 10am.
Post time is set for 1:30pm. Admission is: Adult $15, $3 Children
6-12, Children under 6 are free.

For those who thought he might have lost his championship edge
Jimmie Johnson is back and he joined an elite club on Saturday
night. By beating Brad Keselowski to the nish of the NASCAR
Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway by .841 seconds,
Johnson won the exhibition event for the third time, tying Dale Earn-
hardt Sr. and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon for most
all-time. Matt Kenseth ran third, followed by Kyle Busch and Dale
Earnhardt Jr., who qualied for the event by winning the prelimi-
nary Sprint Showdown. The All-Star Race win and accompanying
seven-gure rst prize ended a spectacular eight days for Johnson,
who delivered victory No. 200 to owner Rick Hendrick May 12 at
Darlington and on Thursday night cheered his crew to its rst victo-
ry in the NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge in Charlotte, N.C. All
told, Johnson won $1,071,340 for his third win in 11 All-Star starts.
It means a ton to me, Johnson said of tying Earnhardt Sr. and
Gordon. Those are two of the greatest drivers that have ever been in
a stock car. I want to set my goals high, and I want to be considered
one of the best to sit in a stock car, and the only way you can do that
is by winning big races and piling up those stats. The All-Star Race
victory was the seventh as a car owner for Hendrick, who sat on the
window ledge and took a ride to Victory Lane on Johnsons winning
Chevrolet after the race.
Pittston, Maines Ben Ashline destroyed the eld Sunday taking
the checkers at the Armed Forces Day ACT 150 at Oxford Plains
Speedway. The win was the rst American Canadian Tour career
victory for the driver of the No 15ME D S Norton Construction
Chevrolet. Joey Polewarczyk Jr. nished second for his third top-
5 nish in four starts. Jeff White nished third followed by Brent
Dragon and Austin Theriault, fourth and fth, respectively.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.s success at Iowa Speedway continued on
Sunday as the defending NASCAR Nationwide Series points cham-
pion extended his winning streak at the Iowa track, dominated the
eld for most of the race to capture the checkered ag at the Nation-
wide Series Pioneer Hi-Bred 250. The win is the third straight at
the 0.875-mile track for Stenhouse, who swept the two Nationwide
races held there last year. The Roush Fenway Racing driver claimed
his third win in 10 starts this season, extending his season points
lead to 28 points over Elliott Sadler, who ran a distant second. Sten-
house held off the likes of Kurt Busch, Sadler and Justin Allgaier
during late restarts, as the races four cautions proved to be the only
thing that could trim his lead, which grew to nearly ve seconds at
times. Man, this one was fun, Stenhouse said. I love dominating
those races.
In a hard fought battle Jeff
Marshall hold off repeated
challenges from Luke Shannon
to win Saturday nights North
Country Ford Late Model fea-
ture at Riverside Speedway.
Shannon held on for second
and Steve Patenaude nished
third-his rst podium nish
since 2008. Chandler Davis
busted through the eld to win
the Outlaw Sportsman feature
and Dave Gyger followed up a
second place nish on opening
weekend to take the hardware
in the Dwarf Car division. Ja-
son Kenison took home the
checkers in the Street Stocks
while Traci Nelson (Angels)
and Anthony LaCoss (Daredev-
ils) also dropped in for Victory
Lane visits.
With Brad Keselowski dog-
ging him to the nish line, and with just enough fuel to make it to
the end of the race, Justin Lofton held off Keselowski to win Friday
nights North Carolina Education Lottery 200 NASCAR Camping
World Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The victory
was the rst in the series for Lofton, who arrived at the nish line
.261 seconds ahead of owner/driver Keselowski, who was trying to
score his rst NCWTS win. Lofton took over the series lead by one
point over Timothy Peters. Todd Bodine ran third, followed by Ja-
son Lefer and Ron Hornaday Jr. After the race Keselowski had a
heated exchange with Hornaday, stemming from contact between
their trucks on the next-to-last restart with nine laps left in the race.
I had had terrible restarts all night, Lofton said after the race. The
truck was not bad on the very rst start of the race -- I just had that
bad a (start) and fell back that far. But the stars aligned, I gured out
what I needed to do, and the best thing is, I outsmarted him (Kesel-
owski). I think I had some help from Ron Hornaday, when he and
Keselowski got in a little battle. Once I got out front (with four laps
left), I knew I was OK. There was a short amount of laps left that I
knew I could stay out front. I surprised myself, denitely. Kesel-
owski had just cleared Lofton for the lead entering Turn 1 on Lap
119 when Nelson Piquet Jr. caused caution for the second straight
time when he pancaked his No. 30 Chevrolet against the Turn 1
wall. But Keselowski lost the lead on the restart on Lap 125 of 134
when Hornaday, who lined up behind him, ran into the back of his
No. 19 Ram. To Keselowski, the contact was unjustied. I came
on the radio and asked him, Hey, man, Ill play it cool; just be nice
and smooth, and well both have great days, Keselowski said of
his communication with Hornaday before the restart. Instead he
decided to be a jackass and just run me over. And it cost him what
would have been an easy second place, and then it obviously cost me
the win, so we both lost out on the deal.
After a heat race in which he nished rst by only leading the nal
15 feet; defending USAC DMA champion Flatfoot Joe Krawiec
of Bristol, CT turned in a dominating performance to win the 25
lap feature at Bear Ridge Speedway on Saturday night. Krawiecs
teammate and season opener winner Kevin Chaffee of Fairlee, VT
raced his way from 13th to nish second, but was unable to mount
a serious assault for the lead. Young Tim Gallant of Wales, MA
showed both speed and car control to nish third.
Garage Garble
Brad Kieslowskis boys-have-at-em mix-up with former series
champion Ron Hornaday Jr. on Friday night kept the former trucks
series competitor from becoming the 24th different driver to win in
all three national series with a victory in the N.C. Education Lottery
200. In addition, he would have joined his father, Bob Keselowski,
as a winner in the series becoming the rst father/son duo to visit
victory lane.
The rst three events of the American Canadian Tour season were
a total of 412 laps and were completed in a combined 3 hours, 50
minutes and 52 seconds. The events saw a combined 21 cautions,
which averages out to one caution every 19.6 laps completed. The
combined margin of victory for all three events was under a second
at .836 seconds. A total of 13 different drivers have led at least one
lap so far this season. There have been 17 lead changes. 49 of the
combined 92 starters of the feature events have nished on the lead
lap.
What Theyre Saying
It is pretty crazy to hear that. I can remember watching those
guys growing up and thinking about how good they were. To hear
that Im right there with them as far as wins for this race, thats a
pretty neat thing to hear. The Memorial Day Classic is right up there,
its one of the big ones. It always starts the year off, so its a great
one to win to get yourself a little momentum; Dave Pembroke, who
to date, has already recorded three wins in the T Rs Memorial Day
Classic. He only trails J. P. Cabana (4 wins) and Dave Dion (9 wins)
for overall victories. As always Pembrokes nature was to be hum-
bled to hear his place in Memorial Day Classic history.

As the month of May winds down, the race teams of Barres
Thunder Road prepare for the Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Clas-
sic on Sunday May 27 and the opportunity to become the 50th race
champion The race is the rst race of the Vermont State Late Model
Championship Series. After a three-week break, the event is the sec-
ond point-counting race for the Bond Auto Tigers and Allen Lum-
ber Street Stocks, but for the Late Model Sportsmen it serves as
their rst. This year marks the 50th Annual Memorial Day Classic
at Thunder Road. The legendary Roy Pappy Forsythe, who now is
forever commemorated by Thunder Roads Forsythe Hill in turn
three, won the rst event in 1961. The race has been won by, and
created, legends of Northeast Late Model racing with names like
Jean-Paul Cabana, Bobby Dragon, Robbie Crouch, and Dave Dion,
who have all notched victories in the prestigious race.
Another week in the hub of Stock Car Racing home town and its
on to the 53rd Annual Coco-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speed-
ways 1.5-mile quad-oval on Sunday May 27 (FOX, 6:00 p.m.) for
the Cup teams. Kevin Harvick is the defending race champion lead-
ing the 2011 event two times for two laps and a 0.703 second margin
over David Ragan. Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the race coming to the
white only to run short of fuel less than half-a-lap from the nish.
Brad Keselowski is the defending pole sitter. The 2011 edition of the
race featured 14 cautions and 38 lead changes among 19 different
drivers.

As the month of May winds down, the race
teams of Barres Thunder Road prepare for the
Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic, the first
race of the Vermont State Late Model
Championship Series. After a three-week break,
the event is the second point-counting race for
the Bond Auto Tigers and Allen Lumber Street
Stocks, but for the Late Model Sportsmen it
serves as their first. It represents the beginning
of a grueling summer-long battle for track cham-
pionships, but in 2012 the Mekkelsen RV
Memorial Day Classic has a special number
attached.
This year marks the 50th Annual Memorial
Day Classic at Thunder Road. The legendary
Roy Pappy Forsythe, who now is forever com-
memorated by Thunder Roads Forsythe Hill
in turn three, won the first event in 1961. The
race has been won by, and created, legends of
Northeast Late Model racing with names like
Jean-Paul Cabana, Bobby Dragon, Robbie
Crouch, and Dave Dion, who have all notched
victories in the prestigious race. The Memorial
Day Classic continues to be legendary today.
2011 Thunder Road Track Champion David
Pembroke finished second in last years event,
but has already recorded three wins in the race.
He only trails Cabana (4 wins) and Dion (9
wins) for overall victories. He was humbled to
hear his place in Memorial Day Classic history.
It is pretty crazy to hear that. I can remember
watching those guys growing up and thinking
about how good they were. To hear that Im right
there with them as far as wins for this race, thats
a pretty neat thing to hear, remarked Pembroke.
The Memorial Day Classic is right up there, its
one of the big ones. It always starts the year off,
so its a great one to win to get yourself a little
momentum, he finished.
The quest to become the 50th Champion of the
Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic begins on
May 27 at 1:30pm. It will also be the first race of
the Vermont State Championship Series, a four
race series with two events each at Thunder
Road and at Devils Bowl Speedway in West
Haven, VT. Tickets for Adults are $15, Children
6-12 $3, Family Fare is $30, Children 6 and
under are free.
