Materials

There are thousands of household


materials available today. There are
materials used in cleaning the house.
They are used to get rid of harmful
bacteria and other microorganisms
that cause diseases. While some of
these household materials are
effective and safe to use, there are
also those that are toxic and
poisonous. It is important that you
know how to classify and use
materials properly.

1. Food Preservatives and Additives


Food preservatives are substances
that are used to prevent the action of the
agents of spoilage such as bacteria,
molds, yeasts and insects.
Preservatives such as sodium nitrate,
sodium benzoate and sorbic acid are
used to preserve food packed in cans,
bottles or even in plastics.
Additive enhances the taste and color
of food.
Examples: - achuete

- Tartrazine in packed and bottled juices


and ice cream
- Bromate in pandesal
- Salitre in hotdog, corned beef and
luncheon meat
2. Housekeeping Materials
a. Antiseptic kills germs and prevents
them from spreading diseases.
- soap, shampoo, detergents

b. Pesticides contain chemicals that are


harmful to insects and other pests.
Herbicides are chemical preparations
that kill weeds.
Fungicides kill fungi and molds.
Streptomycin are example of
fungicide applied on the skin to kill the
fungus that causes skin diseases like
tinea flava.
Insecticides kill insects.

3. Synthetic Materials are materials


created artificially using chemicals. Some
of them are come from carbon, hydrogen,
nitrogen and oxygen. Through chemical
processes, they are changed into new
substances.
Example: plastic
4. Paint is a mixture of coloring matter
with a suitable liquid, that forms a dry
coat when spread over a surface. It
prevent rusting. I also beautify and help
protect things from wear and tear.

5. Solvent is a substance, often a liquid,


that dissolves other substances.
Examples: Water - universal solvent
Thinner used to remove paint
Vinegar and calamansi extract used
to remove stains in clothes
Muriatic acid effective solvent in
removing stains in kitchen sinks and
bathroom tiles.
Acetone used to remove nail polish
Alcohol used to remove permanent ink
on a white board
