Fundamental goal of neutrino physics:
Determination of neutrino mass matrix
The neutrino mass matrix is given by
Neutrino mass matrix is specified
by 9 physical parameters
• Three neutrino masses:
• Three mixing angles:
• Three CP-violating phases:
Dirac-Type CP-violating phase
Majorana-type CP-violating phases
Current experimental knowledge
• Two mass-squared differences:

• Two mixing angles:

(The errors are at 1, 3 standard deviations)

There exists upper bounds on the
following parameters:
• 1-3 mixing angle:

at 1 (3) standard deviations

• Absolute neutrino mass scale
(Tritium beta decay, neutrinoless double
beta decay, cosmology)
Hopes from future experiments

• The study of CP-violation at long-baseline/

reactor experiments will provide
information on Dirac phase
• Neutrinoless double beta decay experiments
will provide constraints on Majorana phases
The ee element of the neutrino mass matrix is

This element is the function of 4 parameters:

2. The lightest neutrino mass
3. 1-3 mixing angle
4. The Majorana phase:
5. The Majorana phase:

Two constraints on 4 parameters
Solution for a special case

• The Majorana phase is left unconstrained.

• The solution exists for one point on
the plane .
• This point will expand into a region for
non-zero 1-3 mixing.
General Solution

• We obtain two conditions on the 4

dimensional parameter space
• The allowed parameter space is a two
dimensional region on the
plane

The case :
We obtain
• independently of alpha! (there are only two
eigenvalues and one Majorana phase)
• incompatible with CHOOZ bound
disallowed at 2.3 standard deviations
This case was found to be allowed in an analysis
by Xing [Phys. Rev. D 65, 092007 (2002)]
and disallowed in an analysis by Chauhan et

Conclusions
Neutrino mass matrices with a texture zero
at the ee entry naturally lead to NH and
small 1-3 mixing.

Therefore, the 2-Texture Zero

mass matrices with vanishing ee entry
should also give hierarchical mass spectrum
with normal ordering.
