T AJAY KUMAR
Why do we need SENSORS:
Sensors gather data quickly and record it
accurately.
For Safety and Security
In the Classroom i.e during labaratory works
In industrial
To Monitor our Health
What is a sensor
A device which detects or measures a physical
property and records, indicates, or otherwise
responds to it.
sensors may provide various types of output,
but typically use electrical or optical signals as
input.
Difference between transducer and
sensors:
A sensor is a part of transducer
Torque sensors
Is a device for measuring and recording
the torque on a rotating system, such as
an engine, crankshaft.
Types of torque sensors:
Static torque sensors:
No angular acceleration/deceleration
Constant angular velocity , force through a
distance is measured using Static Torque Sensor.
Dynamic torque sensors:
Involves angular acceleration/deceleration
Angular velocity varies i.e is Rotary or angular
force is measured using Dynamic Torque Sensor
Methods of torque measurements
Reaction Torque Measurements
Inline Torque Measurements
Reaction torque measurements
Based on newtons 3rd law
Torque required is found by measuring
reaction torque

Inline torque measurements:

Inserting a torque sensor between torque
carrying components
Rotating sensor has to be connected with a
stationary signal receiver
TYPES OF TORQUE SENSORS
Strain gauge torque sensor with slip ring
arrangement
Strain gauge torque sensors with rotating
transformer
TORQUE MEASUREMENT USING PROXIMITY
SENSORS
Strain gage torque sensor
Invented in 1938 by Edward Simmons and
Arthur Ruge
Strain gauge technology uses the resistive
measurement principle, which is based on
changes in resistance through positive and
negative expansion of the strain gauge.
Change in electrical resistance is measured
using a wheatstone bridge
working principal
Advantages:

material cost of strain gauges is cheap,

they have to be installed manually
Where it is used
Strain gauge technology is used in a wide
range of industry applications e.g.
infrastructure purposes like avionics, railways
and automobiles.
TORQUE MEASUREMENT USING
PROXIMITY SENSORS
A proximity sensor often emits an electromagnetic field or a
beam of electromagnetic radiation and looks for changes in
the field or return signal. The object being sensed is often
referred to as the proximity sensor's target.
Ex. In Proximity sensor installed on the front of an iPhone 5 next to the earpiece
automatically turning off the touch screen when the sensor comes within a
predefined range of an object.
When a toothed wheel is attached to a rotating shaft
