GENERAL SANTOS CITY WALKABLE

GOVERNMENT CENTER
A FIRST STEP TOWARDS A WALKABLE CITY

PRESENTED BY:
MICHAEL T. ANG, FUAP, PIEP

TOURISM SITE DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

TIERRA MONTANA, GENERAL SANTOS CITY
JULY 10, 2017
DEFINITION OF WALKABILITY

The practicality and pleasantness to walk in a

neighborhood to accomplish daily tasks such as
commuting to work and school.
VALUE OF WALKABILITY

Walking is associated with a high quality of life

and reduced environmental impact.
RELATED CONCEPTS

CLARENCE STEIN SUPERBLOCK MODEL

RESILIENT CITIES
PASSIVE DESIGN
URBAN DENSITY
SUPERBLOCK MODEL

A city block that's larger than a traditional block, potentially

with an interior network of broad sidewalks. A superblock can
be created by disallowing cars on small roads in a
neighborhood.
RESILIENT CITIES

The design of cities to endure physical, social and

economic shocks and stresses.
PASSIVE DESIGN:
Infrastructure, architecture and devices that achieve a result by directly using
natural forces without first converting it to electricity.
URBAN DENSITY:
Having a number of good corner stores, deli's, restaurants, cafes, and
other personal services within walking distance of most homes
delivers a higher quality of life to all residents of a town or city.
Increased density greatly reduces driving, traffic congestion, and vast
amounts of air pollution that come with it. In America, there is a
growing consumer preference for places of higher density providing
desired urban amenities.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
1. It is healthy. It helps people live longer. It helps people lose weight and
reduce risk to chronic diseases.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
2. It makes people Happier. Research shows that people who walk
8.6 minutes a day are 33% more likely to report better mental
health.
.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
3. It brings back eyes on the street
encouraging more people to walk is a cheaper way of increasing
surveillance and making streets feel safer.

surveillance and making streets feel safer.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
4. It makes neighborhoods more vibrant
The same features that make streets more walkable, like a safer and more
attractive design, make people want to spend more time in them generally,
bringing vibrancy back to neighborhoods.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
5. It enhances the sense of place
Spending time walking through a neighborhood, rather than driving, helps
people have a better sense of what makes it uniqueand more likely to
want to help take care of it.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
6. It is universally accessible
While not everyone can afford a car or knows how to drive, walking is
universally accessible, and even those who drive also walk at some points
during the day. Designing pedestrian infrastructure for those who are less
mobile also helps make the experience of walking better for everyone.
6.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
7. It fosters social interaction
Walkable streets bring people together who might not otherwise have
meet. It connects people across generation.

12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
9. It reduces air pollution
Over the long term, pedestrianization can improve health as the air grows
cleaner, and can help cut a citys carbon footprint
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
10. It increases permeability
Walkability can also make cities more permeable, or easier to move
around, creating a walking network that may even be easier to use than
driving.

12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
11 It makes cities more competitive
Walkability is directly connected to liveability. When Melbourne
redesigned its center for pedestrians, it saw an 830% increase in residents,
and it was recognized as The Economists worlds most liveable city five
years in a row.
.
12 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD ADAPT
WALKABILITY:
12. It inspires civic responsibility
Walkability brings people together with other community members, which
increases a sense of responsibility. As people interact more on streets, that
also builds a sense of community.
PROPOSED DESIGN SOLUTIONS

Reduce heat
2. Protection from the elements/covered walks
3. Public art Installations
