INTRODUCTION
Bharat Sanchar Nigam limited formed in October 2000.
BSNL is world’s 7th largest telecom services provider.
Today BSNL has a network of over 45 million lines
covering 5600 towns with over 35 million telephone
connection.
BSNL has more than 2.5 million WLL subscribers.
BSNL has more than 2.5 million internet customers.
BSNL has been adjudged as the number one ISP in the
country.
BSNL has 0.6 million data one broadband customers.

The present turn over of BSNL is more than Rs. 351,820
million with net profit to the tune of Rs.99,390 million.
BSNL plans to expand its customer base from present
47 million lines by December 2007 infrastructure
investment plan to the tune of Rs. 733 cores in the
next three years.
HISTORY OF TELEPHONE
The word “telephone “ is the combination of two Greek
word “Tele” and “Phone”. ”Tele” means far and “Phone”
means voice and sound.
In 1874 Alexander graham bell invented the principle
of telephone.
Research of electronic telephone exchanges was
ultimately perfected in 1960.
The research on mobile technology begins in 1946.
EXCHANGE LAYOUT
Typical exchange contains of :
Switch room.
Power plant room.
Battery room.
Main Distribution Frame(MDF) room.
MAIN SECTION OF EXCHANGE
There are three components of exchange :
MDF .
POWER PLANT .
SWITCHING ROOM.
MAIN DISTRIBUTION FRAME
Introduction:
MDF means Main Distribution Frame.Local cable
contact at MDF.
All types of cable out to the door, contact connection
at MDF.
POWER PLANT
The main parts of power room are :
Batteries.
UPS (Uninterrupted power supply).
Charging – Discharging room.
Inverter and Converter unit.
SWITCHING ROOM
This is the room where the switching of calls takes place.
This is the unit responsible for testing the eligibility of
an authorized subscriber.
This room consists of arrangement of cards in a rack,
this rack has allotted terminals of authorized
subscriber. A card can have 16 connections.
Suppose a number 2206001 has N.E. 120-03-08-05 then
this means 120 stands for DLU(digital line unit),03-rack
no.,05 for port on the card.
MAIN DISTRIBUTION FRAME
The primary function of MDF is to remove fault. It is also
known as Fault Remove Section.
The telephone numbers are also disconnected in the MDF
because of some specific reason.
ORGANIZATION OF MDF :
Vertical side .
Horizontal side.
RACKS IN MDF ROOM
VERTICAL SIDE
RACK: -On the rack, the tags are situated. One rack is having
eight tags. The counting is done from up (0) to down (7).
TAGS: -Each rack consists of eight tags.
1 tag = 4 core
1 core = 4 bunch
1 bunch = 2 line
N.E.:-The word NE stands for the ‘NUMBER OF EQUIPMENT’.
It is used for testing number and
WEDGE: Wedge is used as a device for checking the ring.
Wedge is placed in jack strips, which is connected to
telephone for checking.
HORIZONTAL SIDE
The horizontal side connected to the underground cable.
This cable is having 100 pairs. These pair is distribute.
when we allot the telephone number to the subscriber.
Horizontal side is again subdivided in two
parts:
One part is connected with the vertical side.
Another with the subscriber line by using 100 pair
underground cable.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FAULT
LOOP FAULT:-If two wires are joined together because of improper
connection,
storming air etc.
EARTH FAULT:-If two wires get scrape at some places and if this wire
comes in
contact with tree, pillar or any metal objects then this type of fault
occurs.
CABLE FAULT:-For outdoor connections, jelly filled wires are used
which are affected by natural causes such as rain, earthquake etc. At
such time this fault occurs.
DISCONNECT FAULT:-This type of fault occurs due to the breaking
of wires between the vertical side & LEN side.
