TOOLS/UTENSILS AND

EQUIPMENT USED IN FOOD

In this lesson, the different tools/utensils
and equipment will be discussed. The
pupils will know the right and proper
handling of this tools/utensils and
equipment used in food preservation.

The tools used in food preservation are much the
same as the tools used in a standard kitchen.
Finding the right tools for preserving foods will be
simple when the different classifications are
understood.

Funnel - an open vessel ending at the bottom in a tube used
for pouring liquids into another container.

Pressure Canner - used to can low acid food. Can be


purchased with weighted or dial gauges. Available in many
sizes.

Measuring Cups - for accurate measurement of ingredients. It


is usually a set of individual cups graduated in fractions of 3/4,
½, 1/3, and ¼. Liquid ingredients are usually measured using
measuring cup made of transparent glasses or plastic cups.

Jelly Bags - used to strain juice from softened fruit
and pulp.

Measuring Spoons – come in sets of individual


spoons measuring 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, ½
teaspoon, and ¼ teaspoon.

Colander or Strainer - good for draining fruits and


vegetables.

Tongs – tool for seizing, holding, or lifting.

Knives – used for cutting slicing fish or meat;


scaling fish. Useful knives include a paring
knife, a sharp chopping knife, and a vegetable
peeler

Spatula – used to run down sides of filled jars to release air
bubbles without damaging the jar.

Crock – used to ferment food in pickling, should be clean and


free from cracks.

Spoons – used for stirring and spooning (wooden spoons for


stirring and packing; slotted spoons for lifting.)

Scale – used to measure food by


weight.

Timer – used to measure processing


time accurately.
