1.1. Structure Design

• Element member such as

1. Truss
Load consecrated on the joined
Top cord is compression
Bottom cord is tension
Web cord either tension or compression member
2. Frame
[AB],[BC] BEAM “Tension”
[AE],[CF] COLUMN “COMPRESSION
Member may be columns-beam its depend on load and
type or shape
Loads
• Loads: all forces acting on the structure called loads; that
divided in tow category :
1. Dead loads :weight of structure called self-weight ; and
other load including building such as partition, celling,
pluming.
2. Live load all load act on the time and location ,such as
furniture, all these forces resulting from gravity its refer
to as gravity loads
3. Wind load its important for tall building, thus on light
weight system its critical
4. Earthquake its horizontal loads same as wind loads;
and other load such as snow load
Building codes and design specifications

• American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC): This

specification provides for the design of structural steel
buildings and their connections.

• It’s the one of primary concern in this reference, and we

discuss it in detail (AISC, 2010a).
Steel structure
• Steel an alloy iron and carbon.
• 1st complete steel frame building completed in 1884 in chicago.
• Characteristic of steel

𝑃 ∆𝐿
• 𝑓= ;𝜀 =
𝐴 𝐿
• Where:
• f = axial tensile stress
• A = cross-sectional area
• 𝜀 = axial strain
• L = length of specimen
• ∆L = change in length
