Introduction
■ Family planning is the term given for pre-pregnancy planning and action to
delay, prevent or actualize a pregnancy.
■ Definition :
family planning is a way of thinking and living that is adopted voluntarily,
upon the bases of knowledge, attitude and responsible decision by individuals
and couples in order to promote the health and welfare of family group and
thus contribute effectively to the social development of country.

Purposes
■ Raising a child requires significant amounts of resources :
time, social, financial, and environmental. Planning can help
assure that resources are available.
■ To improve the health of the mother and child
■ Helping to prevent HIV/AIDS
Scope of Family Planning Services
■ Family planning is not mere birth control and by WHO expert
committee it includes :
 The spacing and limitation of birth
 Advice on sterility
 Education for parenthood
 Marriage counseling
 Genetic counseling
 Providing adoption services
ELIGIBLE COUPLES
An “eligible couple” is a newly married couple merriedin the wife is in the
reproductive age between 15 and 45 years.

TARGET COUPLE
The term target couples was applied to couples who have had 2-3 living
children, or even newly married couples to make them accept the idea of
family planning from the earliest possible stage.
