Abstract
• One of the requirements of an efficient engine is the
correct amount of heat shock, delivered at the right
time.
• Digital ignition system is an electronic ignition system
in which spark timing is controlled by a computer.
• That continuously adjust ignition timing to obtain
optimum combustion.
• Computerized control gives accurate timing for all
operating conditions.
Abstract
At the same time use of two spark plugs to improves :-
o Thermodynamic efficiency and power available.
o Their spark timings.
o Speed , efficiency.
o Diameter of flame.
o Complete combustion is possible.
o Decrease smoke & exhausts from the exhaust pipe of
the bike using twin spark system.

WHAT IS DTSI
• DTSI means Digital Twin Spark Ignition system.
• It has Two Spark Plugs that are use to ignite the charge
in the only combustion chamber.
• The Twin Spark Plugs ensure faster and better
combustion.
• In this system the spark timing is controlled by a
computer that continuously adjust ignition timing to
obtain Optimum combustion.
• It use in the petrol engine
WHY IS IT USED
• In 4-stroke petrol engine at
ignition time the air and fuel
mixture does not burn completely.
So we use DTSI technology.
• To reduce dependence on
mechanical system for controls.
• For more accurate and precise
ignition timing.
OPERATING PRINCIPLE
• In digital twin spark ignition system two spark plugs are
used, controlled digitally; by a micro processor.

• These spark plugs ignite the fuel more efficiently at the

end of compression stroke.
COMPONENTS
• The construction of DTS-i engine is same as that of the
conventional 4-Stroke engine. It consists of following
parts:

• Piston
• Cylinder
• Crankshaft
• Connecting rod
COMPONENTS
• Fly wheel
• Carburettor
• 2-sparkplug
• 2-valves
• Position sensor, A/D converter

Here the only change made is that the 2 sparkplug

placed at the two opposite end of the combustion
chamber At 90 degree to each other.
Working of DTS-I system
• When the rich mixture of air and fuel enter in the
combustion chamber , the two spark plugs
fixed at opposite end of engine cylinder generated
spark and this spark burn the mixture that burned
mixture gives power to the 4-stroke engine. Here spark
generated by the microchip .
Various functions of DTS-i system
• It use to increases the efficiency .
• It use for faster and better combustion.
• It has two spark plug , so it burns the complete rich
mixture (air and fuel) in 4stroke petrol engine.
• It use to increase the power output of engine.
Combustion Process
ADVANTAGES
• Ignition time decreases.
• The rich mixture (air and fuel) completely burns in
combustion chamber.
• Power produced by DTS-i more compare to single spark
ignition system.
• Increase the pick up of engine
• Less vibrations and noise.
• Long life of the engine parts such as piston rings and
valve stem.
• Decrease in the specific fuel consumption.
• No over heating.
DISADVANTAGES
• There is high NOx emission.
• If one spark plug get damaged then we have to replace
both.
• The cost is relatively more
CASE STUDY
• This technology is presently being used by one of
the largest two wheeler manufacturers of India
Bajaj Ltd.
• They have a Patent of this technology which gives
them an edge over the competitors.
• They have implemented this in most of their
product line up.
