NECESSITY OF BLOCKOUTS

• Blockouts are spaces that have to be initially left in the concrete


position of the dam or civil structure to enable erection of embedded
parts. After erection of parts these blockouts are to be concreted.
These have to be accurate conforming to drawings.

• Vertical lift gates:


• The embedded metal parts are to be fixed properly in the concrete to achieve
required groove dimensions for easy movement of gate and water tightness.
The embedded parts comprise of
• Sill beam
• Side seal seats
• Roller tracks
• Side guides
• Top seal seat etc.

The critical dimensions in a gate groove

•The critical dimensions in a gate groove to be checked &


maintained at minimum of 500mm interval

•Centre to centre distance between wheel treads.

•Centre to centre distance between side seal/ bases

•Face to Face distance between guide shoes/ rollers.

•Face of seal base to wheel tread and

•Centre line of guide shoes/roller to wheel tread in zero position.


BLOCKOUTS
• While concreting the first stage, sufficient blockouts are to
be left for embedding the embedded parts, necessary
working space shall be provided to carryout further work.

• In the first stage concrete inserts are to be embedded and


rigidly fixed so that second stage anchorages can be
welded to the first stage inserts at the time of erection.
• Sufficient dowel bars are to be provided in between stage 1
and 2 for better bonding.
• Where Concreting in two stages is not possible in two
stages due to restrictions, the embedded parts are erected
in position and connected to suitable steel supports.

HOIST – REQUIREMENTS
 Gates are to be operated for water regulation i.e., water
release for drinking, Industrialization, Irrigation, Power
generation and flood control etc.

 A hoist is an equipment with which the gate can be lowered


or lifted at the required speed of travel or held in a position at
partial opening as desired.

 Requirements – The essential requirement of the hoists are:-


• Reliable operation.
• Smooth working.
• Ability to sustain the vibrations of the gate, held at partial
openings.
• Self locking arrangements.
• Availability of alternative method of operation, such as manual
operation as in case of electrically operated hoists.
CLASSIFICATION OF HOISTS
 Fixed type Hoists: These are independent hoists provided for
operating the gates individually and used for all types of service
gates.
Under this group the main types are:
– Screw Hoists
– Rope drum Hoists
– Hydraulic Hoists

 Movable type hoists: These are mainly adopted for operation of


stop logs, bulk heads, emergency gates and draft tube gates.
The main types are:
Gantry Crane, Monorail Cranes and movable hoists etc.,

(But in case of single vent it is better to adopt rope drum hoist


or hydraulic hoist.)
SCREW HOIST
 Screw hoists are designed as per Code IS:11228.

 Screw hoists are used generally for smaller vertical lift gates subjected
to low and medium head. In most of the applications manually
operated screw hoists are used. The power operated screw hoists can
also be adopted if required for sluices. Where ever screw hoists are
used, the self closing of gates is achieved by applying positive thrust.
• Manual Operation up to hoist capacity 7.5T
• Power Operation above hoist capacity of 7.5T to 15T

 A screw hoist consists


• C.I or fabricated pedestal
• threaded screw stem (structural steel)
• threaded bronze/C.I nut
• thrust bearings
 source of power
- rotating crank (normal operation)
- electric motor (for power operation), set of spur gears/ bevel
gears / worm gears.
SCREW HOIST
Speed of operation:
• 24 rpm (Maximum effort of man for crank force of 10 Kgf at 400mm
crank radius) for manual operated hoist.
• 0.20 to 0.70 m per minute for power operated hoist.
Uses:
• The screw hoist is used when a positive thrust is required to close
the gate.
• The screw hoist is also used in case of low capacity manually
operated hoist.
• It is very compact and more economical as compared to other
types of hoists.
• The screw hoists is used for gates with single or double
suspension.

Limitations:
• The use of screw hoist will be limited where gate vibrations are
involved (the screw threads will get damaged due to vibrations).
• The efficiency of screw hoist is also low.
COMPUTATION OF HOIST CAPACITY
The hoist capacity shall be determined taking into consideration
the following forces which might be required to overcome.

1. Weight of gate leaf along with all its components including the
weight of screw rod and attachments and ballast etc.,
2. All frictional forces comprising of
• Wheel friction /sliding friction
• Seal friction including friction due to initial compression
• Guide friction etc.,
 Consider initial compressive force as 1Kg/cm length of seal,
Guide friction as 5% of gate weight
3. Any hydrodynamic load, like down pull / uplift force etc.,
4. Silt and ice load wherever encountered
5. Weight of lifting beam, if used
6. Any other consideration specific to a particular site / project.

 The worst combination of the above forces during either


lowering cycle or lifting cycle shall be considered. The hoist
capacity thus arrived at shall be increased by 20% to cater for
the reserve hoist capacity.
Design of Screw hoist- stem
 Stem:-
• The stem shall normally be made of mild steel or forged steel or corrosion
resistant stainless steel.
• Standard square threads or acme threads shall be cut on the stem

 The minimum length for which the threads may be provided will be the
sum of the following:
• Total lift of the gate,
• Length of the nut in contact with the stem, and
• Extra allowance of 300 mm

 Design
• The screw stem rod will be designed for direct torsional compressive
load by taking the root diameter at the minimum cross-section.
• The diameter so arrived at will be checked for torsional shear stress,
buckling and for combined maximum shear and maximum tensile
compressive stresses.
Nut
 Nut:-
• Through which the power will be transmitted to the stem (lesser wear
resistance material than that of the stem material is used)

• Square or acme threads matching with the screw stem shall be provided
on the inner surface of the nut.

• The total number of threads to be cut on the nut shall be calculated on the
basis of the total bearing area to be provided.

• The total length of the nut shall also be governed accordingly.

• The number of threads provided on the basis of the bearing stress shall be
checked for shear stress at the threads cross section.

• The minimum outside diameter of the nut shall be at least twice the
minimum inside diameter.
Torque & Efficiency
 For calculating the torque transmitted by the screw threads the following
formula is used.

T=torque transmitted, P=hoist capacity, d=pitch circle diameter of
threads, µ=co-efficient of friction, L=lead of the screw threads,
and β=half the included angle of the threads.

Hoist Bridge

 Hoist Bridge is the supporting structure and over


which the hoist mechanisms will be placed.
 Hoist Bridge design is done considering IS.800.

 The loads which are considered are:

• Hoist loads ,
• Live loads,
• Self weights etc.
Hoist bridge - Loads

• All the reaction loads of host mechanism will be


transmitted to the support members of hoist
bridge.
• The base frames of Hoist mechanism will be
suitably supported by the cross girders/beams of
Hoist Bridge.
• The cross girders/beams will in turn transmit
these loads along with live loads & self weights to
the main girders
Hoist Bridge - Loads

• Live Load: - Live load of 300 Kg/m2 to 500


Kg/m2 is considered over the hoist bridge
area.
• Self Weights: - Self weight of cross/main
girders along with chequered plate are
considered.
• An impact factor of 1.1 will be considered on
the loads excluding live load and self weights.
Hoist Bridge – BM,SF & deflection

• The bending moment & Shear force of cross


girders and main girders will be computed
based on the above loads and impact factor.

• For computing the deflections impact factor


will not be considered.

 Allowable stress in bending = 0.66yp
 Allowable stress in shear = 0.4 yp

Where YP is the yield point of the material of the cross


girders and main girders.

For small and medium size hoist bridges Indian standard

beams.
