RESEARCH
ACCORDING
TO
PURPOSE
1. Basic (fundamental or
pure) Research

–The research finding’s practical

application is not a concern, but the
researcher carries out the research
process mainly to develop fuller
scientific knowledge.
2. Applied Research

Applied research is carried out to find

answers to a research problem and
apply knowledge in certain situation.
RESEARCH
ACCORDING
TO
METHODOLOGY
1. QUALITATIVE
RESEARCH

–This is about inquiring certain

phenomenon or event, individual’s
behavior, culture, practices, and
values such as beliefs and
perception.
2. QUANTITATIVE
RESEARCH

–About investigating certain

phenomenon or event wherein data
are usually characterized by
numerical measures.
3. MIXED METHODS

–It deals both qualitative and

quantitative research traditions.
RESEARCH
ACCORDING
TO
DESIGN
1. Experimental Research

– Two sub categories: pure experimental

design and quasi-experimental design
– Characterized by the three
components: manipulation,
randomization, and control that are
usually considered in experimentation.
2. Non-experimental
Research

–Following sub-categories:
descriptive design, historical design,
correlational design, and evaluation
design.
3. Descriptive Design

–It is used in a research to merely

describes the characteristics of a
population or phenomenon.
4. Historical Design

–More on featuring critical

investigation of past events,
developments as well as
experiences.
5. Correlational

– This happened when researcher’s

objective is to determine relationship
between two sets of data.
– Also called association or relationship.
6. Evaluation Design

–This is conducted to determined if a

program is effective or the other
way around.
