UNDERSTANDING

TYPHOONS
The clouds are going around the
center of the typhoon in a spiral.
That the clouds are being blown by
strong winds.

Say something about the picture

Why do Philippines is
prone to typhoon?
- Because we are near the
equator and surrounded by
warm water
What we commonly experience
during typhoons ?

Strong winds Heavy rains

Tropical cyclone – is the
universal term for typhoon,
hurricane and cyclone and
used by Scientists.
Bagyo is a local term for tropical
cyclone.
The public uses the word bagyo
for all types of tropical cyclones
A tropical cyclone - usually it originates
over tropical or subtropical waters and
rotates counter-clockwise and clockwise.

counter- rotates
clockwise clockwise

hemisphere
Tropical cyclones need the
following to form.
1. Need water vapor in order to form.
Oceans is a better source of water vapor.
2. Require warm ocean waters to
be able to develop.
NOTE:But not all parts of the ocean can provide water vapor.
Near the equator would evaporation be greater
3. Moisture
According to scientists, the temperature
of ocean water must be 26.5°C or greater.

There are large-scale winds that push the tropical

cyclones in that direction.
What would be the reason why
a tropical cyclone dies out even
they are in the middle of the
ocean?
1. There is no warm water to
sustain and keep them going.
2. The water is cold.
3. They die out on land because
there is no enough oxygen to
sustain the.
The public uses the word bagyo
for all types of tropical cyclones.
But scientists have subdivided
tropical cyclones into four
categories depending on the
speed of the wind.
Wind speed, or wind flow speed, is a
fundamental atmospheric quantity caused
by air moving from high to low pressure,
usually due to changes in temperature.
An ANEMOMETER
is a device used for
measuring wind
speed and direction
, and is also a
common weather
station instrument.

PAG
Philippine Area of Responsibility
is an area of the Earth's surface
enclosing the Philippines, Palau,
Taiwan, and the northern tip of
Borneo.
PAGASA starts monitoring tropical
cyclones even before they enter the
Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
What is the importance of
Philippine Area of
Responsibility?
The Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)
is an area in the Northwestern Pacific
where PAGASA, the Philippines' national
meteorological agency monitors weather
occurrences, formation, arrival, tracking
and departure of tropical cyclone within
PAR.
The Philippines monitors the formation,
arrival, movement, and track of tropical
cyclones (Typhoons in the Philippines) within
the PAR.
The PAR is bounded by the following
coordinates:
25°N 120°E,
25°N 135°E,
5°N 135°E,
5°N 115°E,
15°N 115°E,
21°N 120°E
Why does it contain parts of Borneo at
Taiwan, you ask?
The reason is meteorological: weather
disturbances occurring in these areas can
potentially affect weather in the
Philippines, that’s why the defined area is
included in the PAR. It is defined by the
World Meteorological Organization.
Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are
all types of tropical storms.
---different names depending on WHERE
THEY APPEAR.
Hurricanes are tropical storms that form
over the North Atlantic Ocean and
Northeast Pacific.
Cyclones are formed over the South Pacific and
Indian Ocean.
Typhoons are formed over the Northwest Pacific
Ocean.

hurricane's center is
a relatively calm,
Tropical clear area usually
cyclone rainban 20-40 miles across.

thunderstorms

The dense wall of

thunderstorms
surrounding the eye
has the strongest
winds within the
storm.
Under What Conditions do Tropical Cyclones Form?

1. Tropical cyclones usually form where

there is warm water. The temperature
should be 26.5°C or more.
