Fall 2019
Principle of Corresponding States
The compressibility factor Z is approximately the same for all gases
at the same reduced temperature and reduced pressure.

Z = Z(PR,TR) for all gases

Reduced Pressure and Temperature

where:
PR and TR are reduced values.
Pcr and Tcr are critical properties.

Pseudo-Reduced Specific Volume
When either P or T is unknown, Z can be determined from the
compressibility chart with the help of the pseudo-reduced
specific volume.

Problem 3.84
Methane at 10 MPa and 300 K is heated at constant pressure until
its volume has increased by 80 percent. Determine the final
temperature using the ideal gas equation of state and the
compressibility factor. Which of these two results is more
accurate?

Problem 3.84
Five kg of n-butane (C4H10) in a piston–cylinder assembly
undergoes a process from p1= 5 MPa, T1=500 K to p2=3 MPa, T2
=450 K. Write down the compressibility factor ‘Z’ and ‘vr’ for the
two states as determined from the compressibility charts shown
on the next page? Properly show these states on the charts too
using color pen?
