Micro Housing
Introduction
A micro apartment, also known as a micro flat or a one-room self-contained living space, usually
purpose built, designed to accommodate a sitting space, sleeping space, bathroom and
kitchenette in about 100 to 400 square feet (i.e. 9-37 square metres).
Sarah Susanka started the "COUNTER MOVEMENT" for smaller houses which she details in her
book The Not So Big House (1997). Earlier pioneers include Lloyd Kahn author of Shelter (1973)
and Lester Walker author of Tiny Houses (1987). Henry David Thoreau the publication of his
book Walden is also quoted as early inspiration.
Micro apartments are becoming popular in urban centres maximizing profits for developers and
landlords and providing relatively low-priced accommodation.
NEED OF PROJECT
Micro Apartments is that by building smaller residences, more apartments can be built as part
of a development, and therefore the individual cost of an apartment can be reduced.
It gives a more affordable option for students and young professionals who want to prioritise
location over space.
As the number of people working away from home increasing ,the financial burden increases .
Micro-Apartment helps them to reduce it and help the single user to help them.
Micro apartments as a solution can serve to both the scenarios as they occupy less space in
comparison to traditional Indian houses and on the other side they are also affordable due to
its reduced square footage.

AIM
To design a group housing which consists of micro apartment units having less square footage
as compared to studio apartments, efficiently serving all the basic requirements of living. The
prime focus of this project will be to offer the maximum in the lesser area and keeping it
affordable for a larger number of people.
• In todays scenario, it is difficult purchase a flat/house for a middle class person.

Micro Housing in India
• As a concept, micro-apartments in India
are set to redefine studio and one-
bedroom units. For years, studio
apartments and one-bedroom units
have been an economical residential
option for singles and young couples
who are willing to compromise on
space to own a house in a convenient
location, rather than pay high rentals or
take out huge loans to afford bigger
houses.
• Mumbai has been the frontrunner

bachelors and nuclear families, complimented with interactive public spaces, refreshing green
