 A Cantilever is a

rigid structure
element such as
beam or a plate. It is
supported at only
one end from which
it is protruding.
Cantilever can also
be constructed with
trusses or slabs.
Cantilever become a popular structure
from with the introduction of steel &
reinforced concrete. They are used
extensively in building construction.

Simple cantilever

2) Proped cantilever
REINFORCEMENT IN CANTILEVER SLAB

Mainly there are two types of reinforcement used in

cantilever beams or slabs .

1. Primary reinforcement : Its diameter depends upon

the span of cantilever slab or beam.
for 1 m span – 12 to 16mm
2 to 2.5 m- 18 to 24mm

2. Secondary reinforcement:
for 1 m – 10 to 12 mm
2 to 2.5m – 14 to 20mm
Cantilever slabs spans up to 2.0-2.5m
without any special considerations.
It is used for creating balconies, chajjas,
porch and extension over ground ,
Sidewalks of Trusses of Bridges etc.
EFFECTIVE SPAN OF CANTILEVER
• Effective length = length + depth /2
• Support is provided in between= length +width /2

MIXING GRADE OF RCC

• Mixing grade of rcc is 1:2:4.
construction process
1. Very simple to construct.
2. Only one fix support is required.
3. Very rigid, due to their depth.
4. Thermal expansion and ground movement are fairly
simple to sustain.
5. These types of beams create a negative bending moment,
which can help to counteract a positive bending moment
created elsewhere. This is particularly helpful in
cantilevers with a back span creates positive bending.
1. Large deflection.
2. Generally results in larger moments.
3. You either need to have a fixed support, or have a
back span & check for uplift of the far support.
4. When the beam is loaded at one end, the moment at
the fix end is higher, if more load is applied, it can
break free from the support.
