Nipkow

Successful in his attempt to send
images through wires with the aid
of a rotating metal disk (Nipkow
disk)
 “electric telescope” – 18 lines of
resolution
Electric Telescope
• Is a rotating disk with holes arranged
in a spiral around its edge. Light
passing through the holes as the disk
rotated produced a rectangular
scanning pattern or raster which could
be used to either generate an
electrical signal from the scene for
transmitting or to produce an image
from the signal at the receiver.
In 1907, two inventors, Alan Archibald Campbell-Swinton who
was an English scientist and Boris Rosing who was a Russian
scientist, created a new system of television by using the cathode
ray tube in addition to the mechanical scanner system. This
success story gave rise to two types of television systems, namely,
mechanical and electronic television.
