OBJECTIVE

1. Identify the different elements of a
geohazard map;
2. Interpret geohazard maps provided by the
Mines and Geosciences Bureau to identify
areas prone to landslide and flooding;
3. Be aware of how geologically dynamic is
the area in which they live in;
OBJECTIVE

4. Be aware of the potential
geohazards they are exposed to in
their barangay; and
5. identify possible safe evacuation
routes in case of landslides and
floods.

GEOHAZARD

I. What are the different colors used
to distinguish different areas in the
map?
II. What does each color mean
regarding the susceptibility of an
area for a specific hazard?
FOR RAIN-INDUCED LANDSLIDE
PRONE AREAS, THERE ARE THREE
COLORS:

Yellow: low susceptibility-less likely to
be experience landslide; Be prepared.
Green: moderately susceptible; be
cautious.
Red: highly susceptible; Be alert and
ready to evacuate.
FOR FLOOD-PRONE
AREAS:

Pink: Low to moderately
susceptible. Be cautions.
Violet: Highly susceptible;
be alert and ready to
evacuate.
GEOHAZARD

For each hazard and level of
susceptibility, what actions
should someone in a
particular area take during
periods of intense rain?

Where are the areas of high
susceptibility to landslides?
What can you conclude
regarding the topography of
such areas?

Where are the areas of moderate
susceptibility to landslides? Where are
the areas of low susceptibility to
landslides? Where are the areas of high
susceptibility to flooding? What can you
conclude regarding the topography of
such areas?

Where are the areas of moderate
to low susceptibility to flooding?
What areas are considered
generally safe during period of
strong rain ?

Is the school located in an
area that is susceptible to
rain-induced landslides? Is
the school located in an area
that is susceptible to floods?
ASSIGNMENT (INDIVIDUAL)

I. Obtain the approximate location of YOUR
house in terms of coordinates?
II. The approximate distance of your to the
closest major road
III. Is your house located in an area susceptible
to rain-induced landslides?
IV. Is your house located in an area
susceptible to flooding?
ASSIGNMENT (INDIVIDUAL)

Kindly search about the following (print-out is allow,
indicate the reference)
I. Homeowners Guide to Landslides
II. Varne’s Classification of Landslides (Classifies
landslides according to material and type of
movement)
III. A review of the Classification of Landslides of the
Flow type (explains the velocity scale).
