Differential Calculus 1

Try and differentiate y = 2x

remember
dy = n a x n-1 dy = 1 x 2 x (x)1-1
dx dx

dy = 2x0
dx

but x0 = 1 dy = 2x1 = 2
dx

It is true to say that a constant will always be

produced when differentiating x to the power of 1.
Now try and differentiate the following:
dy = 6
1) y = 6x dx

dy = 12
2) y = 12x dx

dy = 4x + 3
3) y = 2x + 3x
2
dx

dy = 15x4 – 3.5
4) y = 3x5 – 3.5x
dx
Try and differentiate y = 4 = 4 x 1 = 4 x (x)o

remember
dy = n a x n-1 dy = 0 x 4 x (x)0-1
dx dx

but x0 = 1 dy = 0
dx

It is true to say that zero will always be produced
when differentiating a numerical constant.

Also if a graph of y = 4 is plotted a straight line

results, therefore the slope is zero.
Now try and differentiate the following:
dy = 8x3
1) y = 2x4 + 4 dx

dy = 3
2) y = 3x + 7 dx

dy = 14x
3) y = 7x - 6
2
dx

dy = 3x2 + 2x + 1
4) y = x 3 + x2 + x + 5
dx
