Introduction

oPurpose of box pushing technique is to form a horizontal opening below the ground.
oBy providing precast box units underground through embankment.
oWithout disturbing overhead amenities like traffic, railroads and various structures.
oThe box section is designed as per IRC codes of practice for loading.

Thrust bed

1. Thrust wall
2. Thrust bed with pin pockets on bed
3. Keys
• Basic feature is to provide necessary resistance needed for jacking operation.
• Precast cover block are provided to cover the pin pockets during pushing operation.

Front shield

• Fabricated for cutting action, provided support.

• Shield is fixed to the RCC box.
• End of the box is cast in a slope with horizontal projection of required length.
• Cutting edge is not only to cut the soil but also to retain the soil above the cutting
edge.

Rear shield

• It is fabricated from mild steel.

• Provided with anchoring steel plates on the face of bottom slab of
RCC box to distribute the jacking load.

Pin pockets

• 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.6m size pin pockets.

• Side of pin pockets are provided with 6mm thick M.S Plate.
• Pin pockets are filled with sand and a layer of concrete to get smooth surface for
casting of box.

Literature Review
Case study(1)
o Chityal railway station, Nalgonda yard
o Work taken up by Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, South Central Railway
o 3 boxes(7.50x5.65m)
o 43.00m long by pushing across 5 existing lines
o 26.30m box cast in situ across 5 future lines
o Hydraulic jacks of 183t capacity
o Each segment weighs 1100 metric tons
o Boxes- M30 Grade concrete
o Thrust bed- M25 Grade concrete

MANAGEMENT
Case study(2)

o Fathenagar and Nature cure hospital MMTS stations in Secunderabad- Wadi section.
o RUB-2 vents of 11.0m X 4.89m
o Wall thikness of 0.90m (12.80m X 6.69m)
o 2 boxes, 3 segments
o Boxes- M35 Grade concrete
o Thrust bed- M25 Grade concrete
CONSTRAINS
1. Difference of 5m from ERL to box bottom.
2. Hard granite rock was encountered at bottom, which slowed down rate of pushing.

Advantages and disadvantages

ADVANTAGES
oNo disruption to rail traffic DISADVANTAGES
oBetter quality control oTrained staff and skilled supervision
oEconomical oNo scope of night work
oTime for completion is less oVertical and lateral alignment of box
oSaving in man power & machinery disturbed , it is difficult to rectify it.
oNo involvement of crane & heavy
equipment

Future scope

• This was done for present need, for future expansions box can be extended cast-
insitu as there are no tracks, thereby it can be done simpler & easier way, instead of
present box pushing technique.
• The present work done is on RCC box, prestressed concrete can also be done,
thereby the reinforcement can be reduced greatly, and cost of PSC is more.

Conclusion

• Box pushing work means partly working in blind, so problems usually come up
during execution of work.
• Close supervision and monitoring.
• Close watch on alignment of the box.
• Quality control.
• Cost of construction is less when compared with conventional method.
• Not widely used in our country.
