Identifying Different
Types Of Triangles
Triangles

Idaho Content Standard

“4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular
lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right angles as a category, and
identify right angles.”
Student Version
Be able to identify all right angles as triangles and classify to which group, they belong. Examine all
other two- dimensional figures, and be able to classify them.
Learning Objective

After viewing a PowerPoint presentation, they will identify equiangular, acute, right, and obtuse triangles
by the size of their angles on a worksheet. They will also identify the difference between equilateral,
isosceles, and scalene triangles by observing the length of their sides.
All triangles have three sides and are 180
degrees. It`s important to notice the differences
of each triangle to be able to tell them all apart.

Notice the similar sides of the equilateral and

isosceles triangles. The 90 degree angle is
create by right triangle. Each triangle is unique.
Triangles
 The “equi” means that all the (angles/sides) are equal.
 “Equi” sounds like equal.
 If it is not equi” angular” (like angle), then it is equal in sides.
Acute triangles have angles that are all less than 90 degrees.
Right triangles have 1 right angle.
Right angles are 90 degrees.
 Not too big (obtuse), not too small (acute), just right.
Obtuse triangles have 1 obtuse angle.
 It’s an “Obvious “Obtuse angle.
Isosceles triangles have two matching sides.
Scalene triangles have no matching sides.
 I wouldn’t “scale” a scalene triangle, there’s no balance.
Triangles

We classify triangles based on there sides or

there angles. Examine if a triangles sides are all
the same, two are similar or if they are all
different. Look for degree markers as well to
help classify each triangle.
Triangles
Triangles give off hints about what kind of triangles
they are. Remember to use the hints when labeling
triangles in class.
Triangles

Triangles are classified based on their sides and

angles. We can define each triangle based on the
information we see. Triangles with three equal
sides are equilateral. Acute triangles are less then
90 degrees. Right triangles have one right angle.
Scalene triangles have no matching sides, and
obtuse angles has one angle greater then 90
degrees.
Write your name on a sheet of paper
and label numbers one through nine.
You have ten minutes to write the
name of each triangle to the right as
well as a brief description of why you
chose that label.
