Introduction

 Los Angeles county is a vast and varied
geographic entity. It includes a group
of inland valleys, a coastal plain
separated by low mountains
 it is the second-most populous city in
the United States America and the
third-most populous city in North
America
 The Los Angeles metropolitan area
(MSA) is home to 11 million people,
making it the second-largest
metropolitan area in the nation
Municipal Solid Waste

 Solid Waste in general can be defined as ‘as a
material which has negligible value to the producer
 It refers means garbage, rubbish, paints, paper,
glasses, old toys, old clothes, spoiled food and sludge
from wastewater treatment plant

Generation of Onsite
waste at handling, Collection Transporation Processing Recycling Disposal
source storage
Municipal Solid Waste(cont.)

 The estimated amount of solid waste generated in
the city is more than 57887680 kg/day
 The average solid waste generation in Los Angeles
County per capita is about 5.58 kg/per capita with
population of 10,435,036.
Impacts of MSW

Environmental Impact

• Scavengers, Gases, Disease out break

Economic Impact

• Waste Handling cost, recovery cost

Social Impact

• Depletion of natural resources, difficult to fulfill the

demand
Chemical Properties of Solid waste

Physical Chemical Biological
properties Properties properties
• Density • LIPD • Biodegradabilit
• Moisture • Carbohydrate y of Organic
content • Proteins waste
• Waste particle • Odors
size • Breeding Values
Chemical formula

 The chemical formula calculations are discussed in detail
in the progress report here is the chemical formula for
MSW with sulfur content and without sulfur:
 Chemical formula with Sulfur
C 64.10 H 1856.21 O 447.97 N 15.72 S 0.06
 Chemical formula without Sulfur
C 40.91 H 118.48 O 26.88 N
Energy Content

 Using Modified Dulong Formula we’ll find the energy
content.

kJ/kg = 337 C + 1428 ( H – O/8 ) + 95 S

kJ/kg = 337 (44.7) + 1428 ( (5.84) – (36.34)/8 ) + 95 (0.19)
kJ/kg = 16934.78 kJ/kg
Proposed Location

 Location of Landfill
Life of landfill


Conclusion

 In Los Angeles County, advanced techniques
required for reduction in landfill disposal
 Need to adopt zero waste concept in Municipal solid
waste management
 The Landfill site should be 2 km away from
residential area
