Maslow Theory

• It is a theory of motivation in psychology consisting of a five-level model of human


needs
• It is often depicted in the form of a pyramid showing the hierarchical levels

• The Four needs which are present in bottom should be satisfied before
accomplishing the fifth need.
Needs in Maslow theory & major factors

• The 5 needs basically fall under 2 major categories :-


deficiency needs (first four needs)
growth needs ( only fifth need)
• Physiological
• Safety
• belonging and love
• Esteem requirements
• Self- fulfillment

Herzberg’s Theory

• Frederick Herzberg is an American psychologist who is one of the original


brilliants in management and motivational theory.
• He investigated the motivation effect by examining people by asking people
when they felt good and bad in their jobs gave contrasting reactions form
the people who felt bad
• From this study his outcome is divided into 2 steps as
job satisfaction:- Motivator factors increases
job dissatisfaction :- Hygiene factor decreases
2 Major factors in Herzberg’s theory

There are 2 factors in Herzberg’s theory:-


• Hygiene factor
• Motivator factor
• This needs are represented as highest level in Maslow's theory which are
known for its vital role.

McClelland’s Acquire-Needs Theory

• David McClelland proposed his theory as


three need theory on the basis of
individual specific needs which are
obtained over time.
• Also formed by the individual experiences
• The needs are Attainments, Affiliation and
abilities
McGregor Theory X and Y

• This theory of X and Y is proposed by


Douglas McGregor in 1960’s
• In this theory , all the factors like production,
human being to get the work done are
assembled by the management
• Theory X : Authoritarian style of
Management
• Theory Y : Participative style of Management
Ouchi's theory z

• William Ouchi proposed the theory which


appeared in his book in 1981
• He claimed that this theory Z can reduce
Employee turnover,
Increase commitment,
Improve morale and job satisfaction &
increase in productivity
Ouchi's theory z (continuation)

• Theory Z helps to make employees more


loyal, dedicated and permanent in
workforce
• which in turn benefits the company
Conclusion

• HRM involves recruiting, training, selection of employees to work in an


organization as a whole
• There are five needs in Maslow’s theory
• The performance of employees can be increased through motivation ( according
to Herzberg’s theory)
