The capther will introduce you to some connectives
to express causes amd effect. In daily life, we may
need to explain the relationship between things. The
raltionship may exist because of ‘causes and effect’
relationship. The ability to explain the relationship of
something is essential because it represents our
thinkings skill and reasoning.

DID YOU KNOW?
The word so / sec/ soc/ is an adverb.
It means very, extremely, or to such a degree.

The word such / s^tf/ is a determiner.


It is used before a noun or noun phrase to add
emphasis.
When to say it..
So...That.../Such...That...
When do we use it?
1. ‘so...that...’ and ‘such...that...’ is used when you want to
show a fact with the result or consequence.

Examples :  Ivan gunawan is so famous


 Ivan gunawan is famous that he appears on TV
The sentence expresses the fact almost everyday.
of Ivan’s popularity. The clause ‘that’ after ‘so
famous’ experesses effect of
Ivan gunawan being popular.
When to say it...
So...that.../Such...that...
 When do we use it?

 2. ‘so...that...’ and ‘such...that...’ is used when you want to


show your extreme feelings or opinions about something.
You are such a bad citizen that you often break the law
REMEMBER!
We may use so or such in exclamations. We do not need
to add the conjunction ‘that’ in exclamation sentences.
The following ate the patterns.
a. The determiner ‘such’ is b. The adverb ‘so’ is
followed by a noun phrase. followed by an abjective.
Examples : Examples :
 You are such a brave man!  You are so cute!
 You have such weird taste!  It’s so dark outside!
SUMMARY
 “So...that...”and “such...that...” are connectives that express
cause and effect.
 The pattens for the connectives are:

a. So + adjective + that + clause


b. Such + (arride) + adjective + noun + that + clause

Examples :
a. Ivan gunawan is so talented that he makes pretty cocktail
dresses.
b. They are such adorable night gowns that women love to
wear them.
